TrustedHousesitters Changes the Life of Rare Disease Advocate, Cheryl

By Sally Keegan | House sitting

This month we share the incredible story of member Cheryl. She's had everything thrown at her during the past few years, meaning she's wanted to live life to the full. After writing a bucket list during her recovery of an extremely rare disease, TrustedHousesitters has played a big part in getting that adventurous side back into her life.

"My journey as a TrustedHousesitter started about two and a half years before my first pet sitting commitment.
In January 2015 I was rushed to the hospital with abdominal pain and 10 days later I woke up from a medically induced coma. I was told that I lost 157 cm of intestines, my spleen and gallbladder, I had sepsis, 24 blood transfusions and was given last rites by a priest. What's more, I had a 15% chance of survival and from then I spent 2 months in the hospital rehabilitation facility with daily physical and occupational therapy.

Once I was released I had 2 additional surgeries and spent the next year healing and going to many doctor appointments.
I used that time to make a bucket list, as I knew it was time for me to decide what I was going to do with the rest of my life.

I daydreamed about my favorite things: travel and animals were at the top of the list. I made a list of all of the places I wanted to see and that became my goal. I also wanted to help others with a rare condition called Short Bowel Syndrome, which I developed as a result of my first surgery. I read about TrustedHousesitters on an online article, which mentioned other house sitting and pet sitting sites but after researching all of them, I found TrustedHousesitters to be the best.

I signed up and began my membership once I felt that I was strong enough to travel and care for pets.
I had my first sit June 2017 in Savannah, Georgia, which was for a family and their cat, Jack. We were a perfect match. I have cared for Jack twice since that first experience and am proud to call the family my friends."

"I’ve pet sat for some great pets in wonderful locations: Vero Beach, FL, Boynton Beach, FL, Washington, D.C., Brighton, UK, and Twickenham, UK. I am now currently in Bern, Switzerland watching Coco, a 9-year-old Pomeranian and Bear, a 10-year-old Pomeranian"

"I have been in Europe for the last 3 months pet sitting and many folks have asked me how I can travel for such an extended amount of time. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve mentioned TrustedHousesitters, everyone has been intrigued.

Over the past year, I have become a Rare Disease advocate and I’m able to work remotely while traveling. I feel so blessed to be well enough to travel, care for beloved pets and make a difference in the Rare Disease community. It has been a complete life change"
