A black cat

Congratulations on your new black kitty! We love these glossy-coated felines, and when it comes to black cat names, there are so many funny, cute and spooky monikers to choose from.

If you’re naming your new black cat or kitten, and need some inspiration, we have some purrfect suggestions for you. Based on the TrustedHousesitters team’s extensive group of feline friends (and a bit of research), we’ve come up with a fabulous list of good names for black cats.

Whether you’re trying to name a sleekly elegant feline or a mischievous ball of fur, you’ll find something here that suits your cat.

Top 50 Black Cat Names Female

We had such fun looking into girl black cat names, and there are so many lovely names for your four-pawed lady.

Getting your cat’s name right is so important. T.S. Eliot even wrote a poem called “The Naming of Cats” in his famous Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats collection, which explains that a cat needs a name that is “singular” and just for him or her.

We’re not sure we agree with this, as we love to take inspiration from other cats’ names! However, you’ll certainly find plenty of quirky and unique black cat names in our list…

We’ve numbered our Top 50 Black Cat Names Female list, but that’s just to make it easier to read. Honestly, we couldn’t pick a top ten out of these names, let alone a number one!

  1. Jet

Top 10 Witchy Black Cat Names

Black cats are traditionally associated with witches, known as “familiars”. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of witchy black cat names out there, often named for famous witches in films, legends and literature. These cool witchy titles are mostly inspired by famous films and stories – see how many you can recognize.

  1. Hermione
  2. Mrs Norris
  3. Gobbolino
  4. Mildred
  5. Witchy
  6. Wicca
  7. Maleficent
  8. Glinda
  9. Bellatrix
  10. Tabitha

If you have a clever-looking girl cat, we can’t think of a better name than Hermione, Harry Potter’s intelligent witch friend. We also really like Gobbolino, the eponymous witch’s cat from the Ursula Moray Williams story. And of course, everyone loves the good witch Glinda who saves the day in Oz. If you have an aloof cat, Maleficent is simply magnificent.

Top 10 Spiritual Black Cat Names

Sleek and silky black cats also suit more spiritual-sounding names. Many of the spiritual black cat names we found come from ancient myths and legends. If you have an elegant feline with bright green or amber eyes that look like they’ve been here before, then this is the list for you...

  1. Nyx
  2. Luna
  3. Artemis
  4. Moonlight
  5. Enigma
  6. Merlin
  7. Morgan
  8. Hades
  9. Spirit
  10. Onyx

Some of these are really unusual names. If that’s the way you want to go, take it a (paw) step further and think about something from our selection of unique black cat names.

Top 10 Unique Black Cat Names

Sometimes, you just want to give your pet an unusual name. Toothless has to be our favourite from this list, and indeed, the much-loved Dreamworks dragon was based on one of the artist’s cats.

  1. Toothless
  2. Darth Vader
  3. Belladonna
  4. Circe
  5. Jack Skellington
  6. Snowball
  7. Figaro
  8. Wednesday
  9. Hodge
  10. Obsidian

Of course, an unusual name doesn’t have to be based around your pet’s colour. There are plenty of cool cat names for black cats that would work for other coats, like the current trend for unlikely human names (think Brian, Dave, or Kevin) or the current top cat favourites (Charlie, Max and Bella, just like the best dog names!).

(FYI, Hodge was diarist Samuel Johnson’s cat, and Wednesday is named after the deadpan daughter from the Addams Family. Snowball, of course, is the cat that lives with the Simpsons.)

Top 10 Halloween Names for Black Cats

We couldn’t talk about black cats without mentioning Halloween. Spooky cats have become a real feature of Halloween decorations and costumes, and if you get a new kit at this time of year, names like Pumpkin or Spooky are just pawfect. Here are a few of the best Halloween names for black cats.

  1. Spooky
  2. Pumpkin
  3. Cobweb
  4. Spider
  5. Phantom
  6. Gomez
  7. Trixie
  8. Snape
  9. Dracula
  10. Nightmare

We especially liked Trixie (after trick and treat), and of course, the stars of some creepy films make an appearance. You could even name your cat “Halloween” if you really love this creepy holiday (Hal for short?). Fans of scary movies could choose an iconic horror name such as Freddy, Damien or Jason, although we wouldn’t like to call for fluffy little Candyman three times...

We hope you’ve found some inspiration for your beautiful black cat’s name. For some lovely general names for cats, take a look at our guide to cute cat names.

Whatever you decide to call your new feline friend, there’s something truly special about black cats. Whether it’s their sleek silhouettes or the way their eyes always glow against their dark pelts, some of the most gorgeous moggies we’ve met have had black fur. We hope you and your new black cat are very happy together.
