Playing a central role in many of the world's most practiced religions and especially popular across the Middle East and North Africa, the sweet, sticky fruit certainly has its place in the land of 'people food'. And with its reputation as a (sort of) healthy snack, we wouldn't blame you for wondering - can dogs eat dates? Technically yes, dogs can eat dates - they don't contain any toxic compounds to dogs, but there are certainly healthier snacks out there for dogs. Are dates poisonous to dogs?

So can dogs eat dates like they can other fruits and vegetables popular in the world of 'people food'? And are dates safe for dogs no matter the type? Well firstly, if your pooch managed to swipe a pitted date or two from the coffee table, there's no need to panic. Dates aren't poisonous to dogs, as they don't contain any compounds toxic to our furry friends. Like with any food though, there's a small chance of food intolerance when it comes to dogs and dates, so always be sure to try your pup with new foods one at a time, staying alert for any symptoms of a food intolerance.

Are dates good for dogs?

So do dates actually benefit our furry friends in any way? Or are dates bad for dogs but okay for pups to try on occasion? Well like with any other food product, your pup can certainly over-indulge when it comes to dates. Why? Well they're high in natural sugars which means if too many are eaten, they could cause a stomach upset and even weight gain in the long term. Plus, dates are seriously high in fiber. And while there's no mistaking that our furry friends certainly need fiber in their diets to keep everything moving, consume too much and they could experience stomach pains and in the worst cases, diarrhea. As for the nutrients found in dates (which we'll explore below in more detail), just be aware that dates should never be your fluffball's primary source for those vitamins and minerals. So, while we can agree that dates certainly contain a range of nutrients great for canine health, there are so many other foods that offer the same nutrients, without the excessive sugar content. And, as always, remember that your pooch doesn't need to be consuming any human foods to lead a healthy life - their dog food is enough.

Health benefits of eating dates for dogs

So, as we’ve mentioned, there are a range of micronutrients found in dates that are great for both the pups in our lives and their humans. But, due to the high sugar content in dates, we suggest you leave it up to the dog food to complete your pup's diet with all the nutrients they need. Caveats aside, let's get into some of the nutrients found in dates that your pooch could be getting a slither of if they're lucky enough to be treated to a date or two every now and then. Firstly, like many other fruits, dates are rich in antioxidants, which help the body to fight off serious diseases. Dates also contain an alphabet of vitamins and a range of minerals including vitamins A, C and B, as well as phosphorus, potassium and zinc. These nutrients support your pup's immune system, thyroid functioning, metabolism, coat, skin, vision, bones, and teeth, while helping to reduce the body's inflammation. Plus as we've mentioned, dates are high in fiber and so can be sprinkled on top of kibble to give their digestive system a boost (but always be sure to chat to your vet about any digestive issues your pup is having).

Feeding your dog dates

So now we’ve settled the question - can dogs have dates - you might be wondering about the safest way to treat your pooch to the sweet, sticky delights. Firstly, we don’t advise making a habit of it, and always keep portions very sparing. Next, make sure they’re pitted (the pit might cause a choking hazard) and chop into small pieces, using it as an occasional training treat or sprinkle it over kibble as a birthday treat.

Other dried fruits

Well like with any food, we advise taking it on a case by case basis. Why? Well not all fruits are safe for dogs, and many dried fruits are coated with additional sugar, sweeteners and even salt.
