Dog amongst sand dunes

The countdown has started: your new pooch is days away from arriving home and you’re tasked with the weighty job of choosing a girl dog name. And it’s no mean feat… you and your pack will be calling this name (in public) for the next few years.

Whether they’re puffy and fluffy, wiry or groomed, we can assure you there’s a name out there. While some will leave you scratching your head, others seeming plain bonkers, you’ll eventually find one that fits like a glove.

So if you've chosen a female dog and you’re into human names, dog names, names for black dogs, or why not, pathetic fallacy names (rainy, we’re looking at you), we’re here to help you find it. Let’s journey through the top 100 (yes, 100) girl dog names, plus unique, strong, badass, cute girl dog names and more…

It’s all in the name: how to choose the right girl dog name

There’s a lot to think about when it comes to choosing the right female dog name. Does it sound too ‘human’, or not ‘human’ enough? Does it suit your new pal’s personality, energy levels, gender and stature? Does it make you feel warm and fuzzy, or lofty and proud?

Just like the rest of our vocabulary, we can all agree that names have a certain feel to them. Before we dive into our list, let’s test this theory: what sort of dog do you think of when you hear Roxy, Levi and Lexi? Pretty badass, right? How about Pickles, Cookie or Minnie? Probably small and cute. And Mabel, Audrey, and Beryl…? We’ll let you make your mind up on those.

What a name means to you is steeped in personal opinion and your past experiences of pets (or people!) with those names. Consider your new pal: are they energetic, sleepy, or strong-minded? Are they fluffy and short, tall and slender, or muscular and stout? Is your pooch’s breed often depicted in Parisian cafe-scapes, Insta-worthy mountain getaways, or the tranquil streets of suburbia?

It’s also worth thinking about the length of the name itself - we’d advise two syllables as a good ballpark, no more than three. In short, choose something you’re happy shouting in public (and potentially going viral online with - we love you, Fenton).

ALL of these factors will affect whether the girl dog name you choose suits your new pooch. So if we haven’t sent you into overwhelm just yet, grab yourself a cuppa and take a look at our suggestions below…

If breaking down your new pet’s personality traits, favourite colours and birth chart isn’t for you, simply close your eyes and point to the screen below while scrolling (only joking). Here’s 100 cute girl dog names, and if you need more inspiration, find more.
