Picture this - you arrive at the hotel entrance, and you’re greeted by a concierge following a polished welcome script. You’re handed a glass of something refreshing, expertly made by a mixologist you’ll probably never see again.
And when you open the door to your room, you find that it looks almost identical to the hotel you stayed at last year, except there’s a 2000-mile distance between them.
For some, traditional hotel hospitality is a taste of luxury and a chance to completely take the weight off. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
But for others, it can leave them feeling far removed from the place they’re actually visiting, and looking for something deeper. That’s why it’s no surprise that many are turning to the more authentic travel experiences made possible by house sitting.
In this community, house and pet sitters have been swapping cookie-cutter hotels for real homes for over 15 years.
Staying in a real home in the heart of a real community means getting to know the place like a local. It’s getting on a first-name basis with the barista, recognizing the same faces at Pilates, and finding the best place for a cinnamon roll - just as if you lived there.

It’s a story that’s played out across the globe. For our members, Belle and Andrew (and their adorable Jack Russell, Lucky), they find true connection to the places they visit through house and pet sitting - despite having worked in the hotel industry for years as resort owners.
“When we travel, we want to immerse ourselves in a community and avoid hotels altogether. We look for connection and adventure, and we love immersing ourselves in different cultures. TrustedHousesitters gives us exactly that.”
The symphony of welcome scripts and ironed sheets is traded in for genuine homes, and a wagging tail waiting at the door. Polished resort complexes are swapped out for real neighborhoods with hidden gems tourists hardly ever find. The stroll to the hotel pool is swapped for a dog walk to the local farmer’s market, and room service is exchanged for a cat purring, or morning face licks from the host’s puppy.
“Our trips are shaped by real places and real connections, not just an itinerary.”
When real homes are chosen over hotels, it gives travelers the chance to have experiences in the local area they wouldn’t have otherwise. For Belle and Andrew, a stand-out sit was in Fontès, a tiny village in the south of France.
“We were welcomed with a dinner party where they introduced us to their friends, and the next morning they drove us around and introduced us to the entire local community.”
And then there are the pets. Something travelers never get the privilege of when staying in a hotel is winning over a grumpy cat named Le George, who might eventually show them the time of day.
“Le George was a grumpy old cat when we arrived, and we like to think we turned him into a kitten again by the time we left.”
Beyond the chance to stay in quaint French villages with adorable animals, house sitting gives travelers the chance to stay somewhere that feels like home - because it is one.
Belle and Andrew landed a 6-week sit in Western Australia, which gave them a base for house hunting, and two dogs named Syd and Solly who soon took to their own dog, Lucky.
“The housing market had died - there was little on offer so after 6 weeks the hosts generously offered to let us stay on in their beach house - it ended up taking us 4 months to find our home. That couple have become lifelong friends.”
“It ended up being far more than a sit. It's how we found our community, our friends, and effectively our new life after moving.”
House sitting takes travelers beyond skimming the surface as tourists, allowing them to live in a place and get to know it from the inside. And it goes full circle - many of our sitters have pets of their own, and host their own sitters while they travel.
“Lucky's regular sitter, affectionately known as "Nanny", spoils him rotten whenever we're away. It means we travel knowing he's not just looked after, but genuinely loved.”
“The whole experience enriches your life. Joining TrustedHousesitters is the best decision we ever made. It genuinely changed our lives.”
And that’s the beauty of house sitting. While there’s no concierge, no polished script, and no swan-shaped towels, there are real homes, real pets, and neighborhoods that actually show travelers how locals live.
