TrustedHousesitters Nicole and Michael are an Australian couple who set about travelling 12 months ago and discovered the world of house sitting. Here they tell us about their life as traveling house sitters from Florida to London to Barbados....
I have always been a Gypsy at heart. For my whole adult life I have moved from house to house, and even city to city. I love change! I guess this is the reason why travel has always been a huge part of my life. Going to new cities, experiencing new cultures, new cuisines; To me travel is the best kind of change.
So it wouldn't be much of a shock to know that my dream lifestyle is one of perpetual travel a to be a nomad. I have had this dream for most of my adult life but of course, it was only ever just that, a dream.
Because let's face it, no one travels indefinitely right? No one can afford that lifestyle right?
Wrong! And when I discovered that people do actually live this way! Well I can't even put into words how excited I was at the thought of actually turning my dream into reality! My husband knew of my dreams but just like me he never imagined we could make it a lifestyle. But after doing a little research on long-term travel I spoke to him about my desire to make it happen.
But unfortunately we do not have a money tree spouting off $100 bills so I had to find a way to make this happen in an affordable way. And how would I do that? House sitting!
We already knew about house sitting as we had house sat 13 years ago when we were building our first home. So we looked into international house sitting on TrustedHousesitters.com and were wonderfully surprised to see just how many opportunities were out there! It didn't take us long to decide to sell our possessions, buy a one way ticket and really start living!
That was 12 months ago. Since then we have been house sitting our way around the globe and it has been the most amazing 12 months of our life. We have looked after some amazing homes and pets while Iave been 'on the road'. Just to mention a few!
- A gorgeous beach house in Florida
- A newly renovated home in San Francisco
- A quaint little cottage in London
- A farm house in in a lovely little village in Spain
- A million dollar home on an island in Florida
- And many more.Coming up we're house sitting in Costa Rica and Barbados! Such a tough life!
House sitting has not only saved us thousands of dollars in accommodation costs (over $20,000.00 actually) it also allows us to have pets back in our lives. The hardest part of our decision to pack up and leave was leaving our pets behind. It broke our hearts. Even though the pets we care for our not our own, it helps to fill the void. The other great thing about a house sitting/travel lifestyle is we have a kitchen to cook in, a laundry to do our washing and comfortable beds to sleep in! Not to mention the times when we have luxuries like an outdoor hot tub, a pool set in a tropical garden, tennis courts. You don't find that at a hostel or cheap hotel!
We also love that we are able to immerse ourselves into the community, to really LIVE in the places we go. You get a better feel for a place if you are 'living' in it rather than staying in a hotel room. Plus, we get to meet the locals and we often discover the ahidden treasures' of a place that tourists do not normally see. There really is no better way to see a place than to live in it. And live in it for free is even better! We hear from so many people who would love to travel more but think it's too expensive. But actually, long-term travel, with house sitting, is much cheaper than living a 'conventional' lifestyle.
Our lives have been enriched in a way that would not be possible if we didnat live this lifestyle. We are grateful every day for our amazing life and we hope to inspire others to follow their dreams of long term travel through house sitting. No one should settle for ordinary when it is possible to have extraordinary!
