I'm a 37-year old South-African freelance travel and food writer, who loves to travel without forgoing the companionship of pets. During the last year I've been on a sabbatical in China, teaching English and exploring the Middle Kingdom and its varied opportunities and peculiar ways. Now as my Chinese journey culminates I feel the lure of housesitting again. One with pets! To fuss over! And cuddle! And dote upon! And to say goodbye to being sad about all the strays here in China :(
I adore animals and back home I was the owner of my own 'zoo' comprising one cat and two dogs. I am independent, yet equally at ease with being sociable.
Why I want to house sit
Gosh, why wouldn't I?!
I'm debt-free, unfettered by kids, self-employed and love to travel and discover new places, while living like a local not to mention having a couple of pets to dote on (as I miss my own 'zoo' terribly - so it's incredibly soothing to have some furry cuddles on hand).
I also love the homeliness of home sits as opposed to the austerity of hotels and B&Bs, and being a lifestyle writer for magazines and newspapers, I thrive on learning about different cultures and cuisines.
And who wouldn't want a loyal doggie at their heels (or a cat rolling around its catnip patch) while one gets stuck in planting, pruning and harvesting veggies and herbs? Hopefully you'll let me do the same in your patch!
I write for long stretches at a time, so I'm very happy with my own company. As long as I have an animal friend for companionship (even a chook will do! I love the peaceful meditation a chicken can inspire, with it's soft, broody clucking), all is well.
All I need to sustain myself is an internet connection, and some shops close by to grab the essentials. When I'm not working, I'll be walking and brushing your doggies, playing 'catch the toy' with your kitties, pottering around your property cleaning or gardening; reading or trying new recipes (inspired by the locale) as I'm an enthusiastic foodie.
It would be an honour and a delight to call myself your house and pet sitter.
Despite my nomadic proclivity, I am a homeowner, so I'm well versed on the domestic minutiae of day-to-day life, and can handle repairmen, changing of light bulbs, watering of plants, replenishing bird seed trays in the garden, light cleaning, grocery shopping, skimming of pools, etc, deftly. I am also excellent in a crisis (don't forget to leave me a list of emergency telephone numbers) and extremely security-conscious (have to be when living in South Africa!)
Having grown up around animals (at one stage, my cat-crazy mom had 17 - SEVENTEEN!) I am totally at ease with looking after dogs (big or small) and cats, and to a lesser (but enthusiastic) extent farm animals. I've also owned tortoises, guinea pigs, hamsters, pet rats, a chameleon and samurai fighting fish. I rides horses and used to own my own horse, so Im able to handle them confidently following a bit of instruction. I still own a spirited Jack Russell Terrier (Smudge, 8) as well as a rescued Maltese Poodle (Beastie, 5) and also the bestest (and admittedly plump) cat in the world (Lolcat, 3). Smudge suffers from epilepsy so I'm well versed at administering medicines, hence special-needs pets are not something I balk at. On the contrary, I believe they need more love and understanding than usual. I'm obviously also familiar with administering flea and deworming medication.
Dog breeds I have experience with: Jack Russells, Maltese Poodles and Miniature Poodles, Dachshunds, German Shepards, Great Danes, Rotties, Setters, Pointers, Beagles, Basset Hounds, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Manchester Terriers, Corgis, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Staffies, (well socialised) Pit Bulls, Standard Poodles, Africanus, Cocker Spaniels, Chows, Yorkies, Dalmatians, Weimaraners, Labradors, as well as an assortment of beautiful 'Pavement Specials' ;)
When I was growing up I wanted to be a vet, but my dismal mathematics soon scuppered that pipe dream. Animal husbandry's loss was literature's gain as I am now an award-winning travel and food writer, which has been (and continues to be) lots and lots of fun! Nonetheless, I still harbour an abiding fondness for all creatures, great and small.
Before I left South Africa and when I traveled I employed a house sitter to look after my zoo, so I know what you need from this experience, and I'm willing to go above and beyond this to ensure your time away from home is peaceful and fret-free. I am quite demanding in terms of my pets' care, and I would offer you the same level of quality house and pet sitting that I would expect. You want daily emailed updates and pics? No problem. A Skype call every now and then to check in? Let's do it!
Please peruse my references, of which I am very proud. I'm also in possession of my Police Check Certificate, which I will happily supply you with upon request. Also, I have intermittently managed two AirBnb's which I found immensely rewarding (from my home in Johannesburg and my mom's in the UK); and these references, which I am happy to supply, should provide an indication of my desire to be an accommodating, friendly, honest, dependable and trustworthy individual.
I hope one day we can get to know each other, and allow and entrust me to care for your most loved and valuable possessions and pets. I would love nothing more than to give you some peace of mind.
