Hello! This is Karen. I am a US citizen currently living in Switzerland and have been working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the last 11 years, a humanitarian who also studied law and history. I love animals and plants...you will see photos here of my Australian Shepherd, Ivo (named for his grandfather Ivan). I grew up with dogs, cats, horses and rabbits, and love them all. I am a non-smoker and pretty tidy. I would be happy to share additional information and references for any potential host. I well understand how important trust is when you are ensuring the care of your beloved pet, as well as your home.
Why I want to house sit
For the time being, given my work overseas, I am looking for house and pet sits in or near Portland. I come home 4 or 5 times a year to see my mother, who recently survived a severe stroke. I’d be grateful to look after (and enjoy) your pets as well as your home. I miss my dog terribly while away, so being able to share some love with another animal would be great.
My experience
I am new to this site, but have lots of experience and can share many additional references, including my vet of many years, who has seen me through everything with both my cat and dogs. I have had animals my entire life and cannot imagine life without them!
While Ivo is strong and healthy, thank goodness, I have lived through caring for my rescue dog, Finnegan, who had immune mediated thrombocytopenia and later epilepsy, as well caring for my beloved Maine Coon cat, Quechee, in her elder years as she had kidney deficiency. So I am comfortable managing special care regimes, including medicines and shots.
Finally, I love plants and gardening, so can keep yours alive as well!

Karen was great. She made it very easy to arrange arrival and departure logistics and was very self sufficient in managing the house. Everything was perfect when we got home. We would be pleased to have her take care of our home and pets again.

Karen has housesit for me on more then one occasion.She has proven to be extremely conscientious and reliable.Our house was in an immaculate condition when we returned. I have known Karen for more than 25 years. She is completely reliable and responsible. She takes exquisite care of her own home, and will be equally careful as a house sitter. Similarly, she is extremely devoted to her own dog, and friendly with all animals she encounters. I cannot imagine a more ideal pet sitter.
