We are an active and non-smoking couple with two lovely and considerate kids. Our son Julius is 12 and he’s with us all the time. He’s home schooled under the UK Elective Home Education programme. But since we are both UK certified teachers and Assessors in education, home schooling is easy and exciting for us and for Julius. Our daughter is 20 now and already on her own.
We enjoy spending time together and since we don’t go sightseeing very often, we are around the house 24/7 most of the time. If there are no pets to look after, we might go out for a day trip from time to time, but we are always back home before it gets dark. If the assignment requires pet sitting though, then we plan for very short outings so that your beloved ones stay on their own for no longer than a few hours. And we always sleep in!
We are financially independent as we run a few online businesses and manage some other ones as well. They are all Education and Family related. We always carry our laptops with us so basically the only thing we need is the access to fast and reliable Internet (WiFi).
We prefer long term assignments, no maximum length though.
All of us (including our son Julius) took elementary dog obedience training. Vito is a qualified cook, so your kitchen area will be in excellent hands!
As for the pet care/ pet sitting assignments, please no snakes, creepy crawlies or dangerous dog breeds.
For the past ten years we have looked after over 30 houses in different countries. Some of the properties had swimming pools, most had gardens and yards, some required animal care and pet sitting, and one involved overlooking an aloe vera plantation:
- Poland: 2 houses
- United Kingdom: 5 houses
- Spain (peninsula): 7 houses including 4 with swimming pools
- Ibiza: 1 house and 1 huge tipi
- The Canary Islands: 5 houses including 2 isolated houses
- Italy: 7 houses including 2 with pools
- Greece (islands): 6 houses
Our skills and experience as house / pet sitters:
Spain, Malaga Province - 5 months
An isolated house located in a natural park with only 2 neighbours around and no public transport available. The nearest village and a bus stop was 30 min walk away. We gave the house a thorough cleaning, redesigned the interior and the outdoor space including the patio and roof terrace, and prepared the garden for planting. We sowed vegetables, herbs and flowers and planted small crops such as cucumbers, peppers, watermelons, pumpkins, tomatoes, beets, carrots, basil, peppermint, oregano, lavender, thyme. We set up a Spanish watering system, pruned fruit trees, did the weeding and replanting, and collected fruit and vegetables regularly.
We helped build a hen house and set the space to accommodate free range chickens and a rooster. We also constructed an outdoor rabbit enclosure where two rabbits were kept.
The electricity and hot water were powered by solar panels so we had to learn how to manage the usage appropriately. During the night there was no electricity. The drinking water came from a local spring so we needed to collect it regularly. We had no car there so we learned how to organise our living properly to have regular food and water supplied weekly. We baked our own bread, planted vegetables, relied on local fruit and exchanged crops with our neighbours. We became part of the local community which relied on land resources, ecological constructions and goods exchange.
Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands - 5 months
A massive Aloe Vera plantation with 2 semidetached houses, 2 apartments for the plantation workers, and a huge store house on site. We were responsible for looking after the houses, watering the plants, checking on the apartments and the workers, feeding the owner’s dog (German Shepard), talking to potential clients and visitors when the owner was away. The place was isolated with only 2 neighbours living around. The island is extremely windy, dusty, dry and hot so we got used to living in such climate and learned how to take care of the plants, the house and the place. The island has no fresh water so we needed to adapt to such conditions taking into high consideration the water usage. The electricity and hot water in the house were powered by solar panels so we learned how to manage the energy usage appropriately.
Tenerife, the Canary Islands - 2 weeks
An eco-house located in the woods over 1000 m above the see and at the foot of the El Teide volcano with a garden set up according to the permaculture principles. The was no public transport, no internet and no mobile network. We were responsible for watering, weeding, maintaining the pool, and collecting crops. We also cleaned and decluttered the whole house inside, the outside space and the garden.
Spain, Cadiz Province - 8 months
A side garden where we sowed, planted local vegetables and herbs (beans, basil, hierba buena, cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, red peppers) and collected crops. During that period we also helped on a local vegetable/fruit plantation where we collected crops such as peas, broad beans, lemons, aubergine, figs and peppers. We were also responsible for maintaining the watering system and 2 swimming pools.
The United Kingdom - 12 months
Victorian detached houses with gardens. We had to keep the houses warm in winter and make sure they were well ventilated during summer time.
Poland - 6 months
Detached houses with gardens and one apartment during summer and winter time. One of the property had a huge garden which had to be watered twice a day during summer time. During winter time we had to defrost the property grounds and remove the excess of snow. We participated in a basic dog obedience training with a professional dog trainer, and were asked to continue the training with the dog (French Bulldog).
Isle of Sicily, Italy - 2 months
Two big villas with swimming pools and situated at the foot of the Etna volcano, and one beach front apartment close to Taormina. During our sitting the Etna erupted two times covering the whole town and our apartment balcony with black volcanic ashes which needed to be cleaned afterwards.
Greece - 3 months
Private properties on different Greek islands with most of them being close to the beach. One of them was in an isolated location on the beach where we were asked to take care of a dog, another with neighbours having horses to feed, and one was a tiny one-room house on Santorini - a former donkey shed!
