Hi, I'm from Boston, but I've lived in Seattle, western Massachusetts, Key West, Tunisia, and the Dominican Republic. I have a private practice in massage therapy and Reiki, work I've loved for 20 years! I've only had a couple of pets, but I spent two years taking care of rental property in the Dominican Republic, and hanging out with the true owner of the property, Teckla the ocean-loving Corgi!
Why I want to house sit
As I said, I love my work! I'm so lucky to live my vocation instead of enduring a soul-killing 9 to 5. The downside of not selling my soul for money, though, is that I don't have tons of it (money, not soul :-))
I like to see new places but I don't like tourist attractions. I know I can take good care of a home and pets, so housesitting seems a perfect solution for a thrifty traveler like myself with more time and freedom than money.
I cared for my family's rental property in the Dominican Republic for 2 years. It had belonged to my grandmother and when she passed away, she left it to my parents, aunt, and uncle.
I took care of regular maintenance and minor emergencies like flooding, frequent electrical outages, and sewer back-ups.
I rented the three apartment units, supervised the housekeeper and gardener, and cared for the dog Gram left behind, named Teckla :-)
She missed Gram horribly, but grew to trust me. When I left, I decided to not take her out of her environment, leaving her instead with Gram's housekeeper who also loved her and could allow her to live life as she'd always known, happy and free on the beach!
My only other experience with pets was my dog growing up, Butch, and my cat, Mikey, I had as an adult. Mikey traveled with me by car from Seattle to Boston...and then to the DR!
He used to follow me down to the beach, so funny for a cat, and he used to love "playing" with the geckos. Sadly he stayed there when I left, resting in peace under a palm tree :-)
Though I don't have tons of experience with different animals, I am super responsible and compassionate. I have also been a vegan for 16 years because of my love and respect for people with fur!
(I have to say, I was slightly traumatized when my sister left her beta fish with me when she moved to the west coast. He got sick. He was sick for a couple of months, often floating vertically. I spent time online and at the pet store, trying to get advice. I did everything I could. People advised me to flush him, to freeze him, oh gosh, I hope I didn't prolong his suffering. He would rally and then go downhill until he finally gave up. I don't care to take care of fish again.)
I have a private practice as a massage therapist and spend a lot of time at my office. I don't want to selfishly have a pet that I can't spend enough time with, but helping others with their animal friends is perfect!
I am easy-going and adaptable, having lived in Tunisia, Seattle, Key West, and Boston. My Spanish used to be pretty good, still sufficient to get by, I'm sure.
I always err on the side of caution and I am a quiet, mature, non partying, go-to-bed-early-with-a-book type.
