3 dogs, 1 house, Victoria BC Canada
Hello! My name is Carol. I have 3 lovely dogs and a comfortable home in a great location on wonderful Vancouver Island. Truly a "home away from home". There are many amenities within walking distance and downtown is a 10 minute drive or a 30 minute walk. My home is 4 blocks from the ocean so the climate is always mild. There are many nice walks in the area to wander around with the dogs.
I have been an animal lover since I lived on a farm as a child. I got my love of animals from my Mom who let us have a menagerie of pets (who were orphaned or injured) when we were growing up. We had a Snowy Owl, a pet Canada Goose (named Homer), a pet skunk (named Susie), along with a cat (Snoopy) and our beloved Golden lab - Sandie. I took my passion of animals first into the beekeeping world and then turned it into a popular business that I continue to work on today. I have a few pet tarantulas and 3 mature beloved Havanese dogs named Ginger, Angelo and Josephine. I am looking for a like-minded community in TrustedHouseSitters.com so that I can travel and trust that I will come home to happy and healthy pets and a home that is well taken care of in my absence. I own a home in a great neighborhood in Victoria called Fairfield. You will be able to walk or bike to the Pacific Ocean and enjoy the views across to the Olympic mountains in Washington state USA. There is a great café down the street where you can buy delicious prepared savoury meals and sweet treats and many other amenities close by. Victoria is a great place to visit... probably the best place in Canada to live. The climate is mild and spring comes early. The roses and cherry trees start to bloom in February!...
If you are flying in from out of town I would be able to pick you up if you arrive b/n the hours of 10am and 8pm. If you are driving there is free parking, on and off street. + More info
Our Home & Location
The kitchen is large, sun filled with tranquil views of the spacious back yard. The back yard is fully fenced and treed. There is a patio off the kitchen which is delightful in the warmer months. There is a large LG OLED TV with cable and movie channels. It is a relaxing comfortable and quiet home with lots of space and tranquility for reading, writing, studying or watching movies. The home is close to the Pacific ocean and other nice walking areas and parks to take the dogs.
The sitter has their own bedroom with a comfortable double bed, and private bathroom with tub/shower and heated towel bars....
I may allow limited use of my vehicle if you are flying in from far away. Or you could use a bike, foot, taxis and bus to get around. It's a very walkable neighborhood and city. There is a pay per use bike system in Victoria that I think many visitors enjoy.
Vegetarian cooking only (I'm allergic to seafood so that includes fish etc.) No cooking curry from scratch (tempering oil/deep frying).
Moderate alcohol OK - No parties.
No children/No visitors without permission. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
I am looking for good reliable "dog people" to care for my dogs and home while I'm away. I have 3 dogs - Ginger (Mom) and her 2 kids (Angelo and Josephine). Mom is age 10 and "the babies" are 8 years old. The breed is Havanese. They are companion animals so they need a lot of attention. They can not be left on their own for more than 3 or 4 hours. They are well behaved and treat trained.
Health update (November 5th/18): Ginger has some arthritis so should not jump too much but she LOVES to go for long sniffy walks. Josephine recently had a lumpectomy. Initially she was recovering nicely (unfortunately the pathology report indicated that the lump is cancer). She is eating well and seems happy most of the time. She will need to be monitored for signs of decline. I won't be putting her through chemo or anything. The vet said it is not an aggressive form of cancer but there is no predicting something like this. Angelo is on an anti-anxiety medication because he suffers from separation anxiety when I go away. Otherwise, he's a strong healthy lovable boy. It is a bit like having 3 toddlers... but basically the 3 dogs function well together. Sometimes there is competition for attention so the pet sitter needs experience managing multiple dogs, and must have good "dog sense". Having one dog is different from having a small pack. The Havanese breed does not shed at all but they need to be bathed and groomed. They love their daily walks (when the weather is nice)....
They are good eaters and drinkers but Angelo gets anxious so he sometimes goes off food/water when he is stressed. It's important to monitor that and monitor his stress level. I am hoping that by having him in his own home with his usual routine when I am away that the stress will be minimal. The sitter(s) must be a confident and relaxed individual. Dogs pick up on the energy around them and the Havanese are particularly sensitive I think. They respond to love like you wouldn't believe.... they love attention and squeaky toys.
When I am away I would like frequent updates (phone calls/emails) and pictures.
I also have a few pet tarantulas but they don't need a lot care. They are not dangerous (no tarantulas are). They might need a bit of water but I have friends who can help with feeding if I am gone longer than a month or so. They are actually extremely beautiful. Check them out online and google images. :) Enjoy.
I'm an entomologist so I frequently travel to tradeshows with these animals and I LOVE to go to the jungle to look for these types of "critters" in the wild.
There is a quiet tenant who lives in a separate basement suite at the back of the house. Everything is separate from the house so we completely independently. + More info
