House/Pet Sitting in the Country South of Ottawa
Living in the country on 20 acres (45 minutes south of Ottawa, and about the same from the New York state/U.S. border), this is a wonderful opportunity for a retired person/couple or someone who works from home or even a single parent with a child/children. In the past we have used local young people to sit for us however these young people tend to leave home for university or jobs....
I have recently retired from the federal government and my husband, an independent consultant, works from home but frequently travels to the U.S. on business. + More info
Our Home & Location
The house is a 20 year old bungalow with a well and septic system located approx 7 kms from Kemptville, Ontario, Canada and has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an office. It is on a secondary country road with only 8 houses over a 3 kms span between the Rideau River and a main road. It is very quiet. The neighbours are kind, pleasant and do not bite. We frequently meet them on our trails with their horse, Roscoe and/or dog Wally. The property has some wildlife (grouse, woodcocks, wild turkeys, rabbits, raccoons, skunks and the occasional fox and deer). Coyotes are in the region - sometimes heard, but very rarely seen.
We have excellent internet capabilities with significant capacity. Use of either a MAC or a PC computer if required is available with WIFI throughout the house. Also available for your use are a "Smart" TV (cable, Netflix,) free phone calls (VOIP) to Canada & US, wood burning fireplace in living room in addition to conventional heating system. The kitchen is modern and completely equipped and the stove/range is electric, as are the washer and dryer. There is a propane barbeque on the back deck for your use, weather permitting. The master bedroom has a queen bed, an ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower and large soaking tub and large screen TV with cable and Netflix. Along with the guest room with a double bed, the LR has a queen sized sofa bed, but one or two of the dogs would try to share it with you....
In the winter months the trails can require snowshoes - these are provided. (The driveway is ploughed in winter.) In the summer months we have a fine bicycle (1) available for cycling and we are about 1.5 km from the Rideau River - there are plenty of opportunities for fishing and even a nearby beach at the Provincial Park.
The town of Kemptville with a population of approx 4,000 has the usual amenities - grocery stores, restaurants, fast food restaurants, even a Wal-Mart. The village of Merrickville dubbed 'the Historical Jewel of the Rideau" is approx 12 kms away and is famous for its local crafts people, artists and working lock in the summer. And don't forget that Ottawa, Canada's capital is just up the road (60 kms). + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
The property is enclosed with Invisible Fence. The dogs are not trained for leash and have free run of the property. That said, they are routinely walked every morning and every evening on our trails through the woods. They need human accompaniment on these walks not because they need supervision, but because they demand the company of a human. Walking and feeding the dogs twice a day, feeding the cats in the morning and just keeping the house generally tidy (we have a central vac) is what we ask. Our pets/companions are spoiled and we give them lots of love and doggie and kitty treats. They will expect the same from you.
All six animals are rescues of some sort or another - Callie (cat) from a kill shelter, Hypatia (cat) found in our front yard pregnant, Charlotte (cat) found on a country road one night, Maizie (dog) trapped on a dock and found by our neighbours and Clarke (dog) rescued from a Northern Ontario Indian Reservation. The unique case is the Chow Chow, Rory. The breeder asked if we would take her as she was born with only one eye. She has been losing her vision and her hearing as she ages so she is now essentially blind and deaf. She relies almost entirely on her sense of smell. She is a sweet girl and is very accepting of new people. She knows her way around the house, she knows the trail network and she knows when it is time to go for a walk....
Beyond the dogs and cats, we maintain bird feeders throughout the four seasons around the house. We would appreciate if someone would take the time to fill them on a regular basis (and replenish the two bird baths in the summer months). If you are at all drawn to ornithology, this place is something of a treat inasmuch as we get a broad variety of song birds, chickadees, blue-jays, hairy and downy woodpeckers, (there is a pileated woodpecker that we hear and occasionally see), orioles, humming birds and the occasional hawk. + More info
