House and cat sit close to OTTAWA
I am a retired French teacher and Susan a retired columnist and journalist covering Canadian federal politics. We are very active: nordic ski , road cycle and mountain bike often in the Gatineau Park. We had a lovely dog who was Muffin and Pepper's (14 yr old sibling cats) pal until early 2016. We are easy going and enjoy meeting people and having folks enjoy our home.
Our Home & Location
We live a very short walk to the Gatineau River and we share a nice dock with neighbours. We have a standup paddle board, 2 kayaks and a canoe. The river is very large and safe and clean. We often paddle 10 minutes across to explore the creek. We tend to leave the dock in until mid October and then take it out before the water gets too cold, and then put the boats away unless anyone really wants to paddle in the late Fall.
The Gatineau Park is close by and has numerous trails for running and mountain biking, fat or snow biking, snowshoeing, and the parkway system is perfect for road cycling May-December.. In the winter, the nordic skiing trails are superb and there are a few snowshoe trails that welcome fatbikers.
We are 20 minutes drive from Parliament Hill and downtown Ottawa which has an amazing amount of museums and places to see. A car is needed to get around, especially from Chelsea to Ottawa as the bus service is not too developed....
Our home and property is very comfortable and big and well-maintained and we have a large gazebo for summer enjoyment. Chelsea has a cute tiny centre with a pub, bistros, cafés, bike shop and is an attraction for visitors who love to ski, bike, hike in the Gatineau Hills, visit Meech Lake and the MacKenzie King Estate. Wakefield is 15 min drive north; a very sweet town on the Gatineau River. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
The housesitter (s) would be non-smokers, looking after our home and two gentle cats who are indoor and outdoor but have to be let out well after dawn and brought in well before dusk. They do like to go in and out for a while and then settle and sleep most of the day. Their litter will have to be cleaned as well. Indoor plants need to be watered and garbage and recycling out on appropriate days; otherwise, the house is pretty easy to maintain and we have lots of property around us for privacy. In the summer, the gardens will need to be watered every couple of days and annuals, every evening or morning.
We are looking for a single person or a couple who are happy to enjoy our home and the Ottawa area; we live very near the Gatineau River which a walking or a biking path which is being developed in the future; the Gatineau Park is very close for hiking and mountain biking.
Of course, Ottawa is fun and a great city to enjoy. Chelsea, and neighbouring Wakefield up the river, have quaint restaurants, and pubs (PM Trudeau was interviewed in the local pub and he is often sighted in the area if you are up for selfies!).
We prefer sitters who are not gone all day every day so the cats are able to spend some of the day outside. That said, we often go out for a few hours leaving them in, so hiking and city visiting , etc are absolutely part of the fun.
Generally, when we travel, we ask sitters for airport run to and from airport, in which case, the sitter has to be comfortable driving the 45 minute driver from Chelsea, through Ottawa to the airport.
Thank you for your interest.
