Costa Rica retreat with 3 carefree dogs and a kitten looking for nature loving sitters
We are a retired couple who moved to Costa Rica to enjoy this amazing country. Chuck is an American from St Louis and Jane is English. We met on the Greek island of Corfu and have lived in the Boston area, in Barcelona ,Spain and most recently and for the longest in the Ozarks , Missouri, raising our 2 children.Chuck spent time working inn the golf business, hotel and music show production and real estate. Jane's career was in nursing. Our last 5 years in MO we raised endangered heritage pigs in their natural setting of woods and pasture. We love Costa Rica for the huge diversity in the environment and for the welcoming, open Costa Ricans " Ticos" and the wonderful people from all over the world we have met. We have lived here a year and continue to be in awe with the beauty and with life here. We need house/pet sitters in order for us to visit our kids, granddaughter and friends in the US.
Our Home & Location
Our home is located in San Andres on the Pacific coast just a 15 minute drive down the mountain to the beautiful beach of Matapalo,Puntarenas. 3 hours from the San Jose airport. It is a 2 story home that overlooks the Pacific ocean at 650 ft elevation providing cooling breezes. Downstairs consists of a full kitchen, bathroom and large foyer. Upstairs are the living room, master bedroom and small air conditioned bedroom , incase you need a couple of days to get used to the 73-85F daily temperatures. There are ceiling fans upstairs and out on the patio. The house is 900 sq ft and the covered patio is around 700 sq ft. There are ocean views from multiple rooms and from the dining table on the patio, we have spotted whales and seen fantastic sunsets. The guest cabin is 200 sq ft with bedroom and bathroom. There's a covered deck with more ocean views. The cabin is equipped with a small fridge and convection oven. Just below the house is a 900 sq ft covered observation/yoga deck that looks on to the jungle wall behind us . It is eye level with an african palm the fruit of which is visited by coatis, toucans , white faced monkeys and birds. Among other wildlife seen on the property have been many butterflies, hummingbirds, parrots, iguana, lizards, frogs and more ! Our 1 hectare property has 25 different fruit trees, lots of flowering trees and a beautiful year round creek at the bottom of our hill in the jungle.
The house is 3 km off Hwy 34 up a gravel road . There are both Cost Ricans and expats of many nationalities who are our neighbors, none of their homes are visible from our house. It is not a gated community....
There are so many local attractions-too many to list them all. HWY 34 is the great coast road which leads to many areas of interest. We are within an hour or less of Manuel Antonio and Marino Ballena national parks , Hacienda Baru national wildlife refuge , the coast towns of Quepos, Dominical, and Uvita and San Isidro de Perez in the mountains. The views are spectacular. There are multiple waterfalls, rivers, hot springs not to mention the beautiful beaches with world class surfing and fishing. Since our dogs do not require constant attention and are well housebroken day trips to coffee and chocolate country farther inland are possible.
Restaurants in the neighborhood vary from the local Sodas with the delicious typical Tico meals to European fusion. One of the best fish restaurant in the country is at the foot of our hill - the Happy lobster. You can find high end dining along the coast at various hotels and restaurants. We love to eat in too using the delicious fruits, vegetables and fresh fish available at the local merchants and farmers markets.
While Costa Rica has a good bus system we would recommend renting a small 4x4. We have an older model Montero 4x4 that can be used to commute to the beach, local dining or Matapalo shopping. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Our dogs and cat are free fed dry food. Our only requirement is that they are in at night. the vet lives 10 minutes up our hill and makes house calls. Archie we give natural immune booster tabs , which he loves ! he developed allergies to some plants in the jungle.
There are some herb plants under roof that will require watering every few days....
We do not have a cleaning service so will need to sweep and dust as needed.
We have a leaf blower which may be necessary occasionally. + More info
