Golden in the Suburbs of Cairo
Hello! I am an American living and working in the suburbs of Cairo. I am a teacher and enjoy traveling on my holidays. For shorter trips I generally have friends watch my lovely Bella, but for my longer trips I prefer to have someone come stay at my home. Kennels in Egypt are not the best. I'm excited to try this for the first time. I have only heard great things so far!
Our Home & Location
I live in Sheikh Zayed. It is a nice "rich" suburb of Cairo. I say rich but the cost of living here is extremely inexpensive. I live in a compound, which is simply a gated apartment complex with security around to help you out as needed. They are lovely men that often translate for me. The compound has three swimming pools(free) and a gym which is available for an additional membership fee.
The apartment is three bedrooms, one full bathroom and a half bathroom. Two bedrooms will be available for your use as I will close the master bedroom while I am gone. It is on the ground floor with a small fenced in yard. The great pyramids and the new Egyptian museum (to be opened soon) are only twenty minutes away from my house. In fact, you pass them on the way into downtown Cairo. Cairo traffic is a bit crazy so I am about an hour away from downtown and a little over an hour to the airport....
Uber is readily available and extremely cheap here. Download the app and you are good to go. There is also an app for restaurant delivery and grocery delivery. There are restaurants and a pharmacy within a 2 minute walk from my house. Don't be afraid when you think about an apartment in Cairo. My apartment is very modern with a walk in shower and dishwasher. I have close connections with a couple of tour guides and will happily put you in contact to set up tours. I also have a trusted driver that can be available to you at any time, including airport pick up.
Money and instructions will be left if wifi or electricity run out. Cable is free (about 20 channels which are at least partially in English) No home telephone available. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Bella needs to be walked daily for at least 30 minutes. The compound is lovely, clean, and safe to walk in. In fact, all of Sheikh Zayed is extremely safe. Feel free to go on adventures. She is fed twice a day, and let out 4 or 5 times a day to play in the small yard. You would need to clean up after her on walks and clean the yard once a week. She is the typical golden which needs to be brushed daily, or every two days depending on shedding season. If you are staying for more than two weeks you will need to clip her nails or have them clipped (she hates this, I have some tricks though). She would also need a bath monthly, which she loves. If you are staying here at the first of the month you would need to apply her flea and tick treatment.
You would basically only be responsible for her care. The gardener comes about three times a week (at my expense) and the maid comes once a week to clean the house and change the sheets if you desire (at your expense). You would only need to do your own laundry and basic upkeep. The maid is conservative Muslim so some arrangements may need to be made for couples or single men staying in the house. If you would like maid service it will cost 200 Egyptian pounds a week, which is about $10. If you do not want maid service you would be expected to clean the house yourself. Egypt is a giant desert and dust and dirt here is no joke. The maid is totally worth it!!!!!!
