LONG Winter Housesit with excellent WIFI in tranquil rural Brittany, France Oct 2018- April 19
I am looking for a reliable person or a couple, small family or two friends to look after our home from late October 2018 to early April 2019. This long sit is essentially a great opportunity to have rent-free accommodation with excellent fast WIFI for nearly half a year. Experience of housesitting and testimonials preferred. We are located in the central Brittany countryside, less than an hour from the sea and are easily reached from Paris or London airports and from the cross-channel ferries. This is an ideal sit for digital nomads, as there is no shortage of peace and quiet and there is very good unlimited free wifi on the whole property which you can use. The house also includes a large art studio separate from the house, with sleeping accommodation also. Because of the length of this sit, it will probably not be of interest to Americans unless you have a long-term visa for Europe or a European passport, due to the 90 day limit within the Schengen zone. We offer you the use of one of our cars during the stay. Couples travelling with well behaved pets are also welcome, and we can accommodate responsible children over the age of about 8. The house is easy to care for and the pet care is simple and light work. There are more photos of the house and more information on our Facebook page Housesit in Brittany.
Our Home & Location
OUR TINY HAMLET in the Monts d'Arree national park is set in the heart of the beautiful arable countryside of Finistere, dotted with tiny white houses, black and white cows and many oak trees. There are many places of interest to visit in the neighbourhood, notably the Vallee des Saints five miles away, which attracts tourists from all over Europe each summer, and the ancient rockfalls at Huelgoat just ten miles away to the north. A wonderful part of the world for hiking, painting, photography, nature spotting and all sorts of outdoor pursuits, not to mention the wonderful French food available in the many local restaurants, and fresh caught fish from the seaside ports around the coastline of Finistere.
OUR HOUSE is conveniently positioned about 5 miles from the N164 and D764 main roads and therefore ideal for exploring the whole of Brittany. We are about 10 miles from the nearest towns, Carhaix-Plouguer and Huelgoat, and 1km from the nearest village shops. Our only neighbours are the farmers of the two dairy farms in the hamlet, from whom you can buy unpasteurised milk straight from the cow. If you are looking to get away from crowds for a while this is the ideal place. However we are only an hour by car from Roscoff ferry, and 2 hours from St. Malo....
THE INTERNET is very fast and reliable here, and it is available unlimited and free for you to use.
DETAILS OF THE HOUSE
We have had our house completely renovated over the past five years. It was built of granite in 1943, in the local Huelgoat style, consisting of three floors, two rooms on each to give a total of 4 bedrooms, a kitchen and a dining room on the ground floor. Part of the adjoining longere now forms an extension living room and bedroom, plus the large utility room, laundry and bathroom adjacent to the kitchen. There are three bathrooms with showers, and one has a bath.
The kitchen is modern with electric hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher and fridge freezer, and there is also a large utility room with a second fridge, a chest freezer, a second dishwasher, and the washing machine and tumble-drier. The house is well insulated and heated by electricity. The house is functional, comfortable, peaceful and safe.
FINALLY Brittany is not like the rest of France! It was a separate country until only a "few" years ago, and the locals have not forgotten their independence nor their own language, Breton. There is a strong cultural leaning towards things Celtic, so in many ways, Brittany is more like Ireland or Wales, or even Cornwall, even down to the language being very similar to Welsh. The winter weather is mild and rarely has snow, but it can be wet and windy. It will be necessary to keep an eye out for storm damage.
Brittany is not the drama of the Alps, the heat of the Midi, the pace of Paris, the taste of Burgundy or the remote ruggedness of the Pyrenees. But if you come with open ears and eyes, you will discover that it has its own druidic, Arthurian atmosphere, its own history, its own people, its own little magical world for you to discover and fall in love with. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
The main responsibility of this housesit is to take care of the animals and the house. In November and March the garden may need the grass cutting once or twice, and we have a sit-on mower. In the winter you may have to be vigilant in spells of wet and windy weather and report any damage to our handyman. The work is not hard or difficult. The chickens need feeding daily, letting out in the morning and seeing to roost at night, and their barn needs to be cleaned out once a week approximately, total time needed per week approx 2 hours. We may have two sheep, and they just need their hay replenished, time needed per week approx 1 hour. The cats and dog need feeding twice a day and Ruby needs a short walk daily, time needed about 4 hours per week depending on length of walks. Total pet care approximately 7 hours per week. In exchange the house and grounds are yours to use as you wish, with the use of unlimited WIFI, Netflix, Apple Box, surround sound, etc. You have free use of our car if wished. We expect you to be responsible regarding the use of electricity, which is now very expensive in France, and although we will pay the normal amount which we use, if you go very far over that we would appreciate a contribution.
