Dog and house sitting in beautiful Gers, SW France
We are Lyndsay and Richard, and we live on a 4 acre area with our 4 gorgeous dogs. We renovated our on site gite in 2016 and now run it as a busy holiday home. We love to see new places, travel, ski and people watch with a coffee. When we go away we prefer the dogs to be at home and we would also love to make new friends through house sitting and let someone else enjoy the lovely place we live in. From experience we know we need a couple for this extended period of time with enough energy to take care of the dogs, house and garden. Richard retired last year from the army after 28 years and I am an enterprising above knee amputee and also run my own business making funky walking sticks!
Our Home & Location
We are nestled among the armagnac vines and sunflowers in the rolling hills of the Gers. The Pyrenees rise up in the distance and are 90 minutes away. The coast is also 90 minutes away if you fancy getting your toes in the sand.
The house itself has three bedrooms, kitchen, lounge, dining room and an office. The garden is huge and plenty big enough to have a nice walk around with a cup of coffee. The dogs love it and they run and play for hours. We do have a pool with a lovely view but in winter's rather too cold to go in but still nice to look at. We also have an outdoor covered terrace with dining table and sofas, for those evenings when it is warm enough to sit out. We live under this around 6 months of the year!!...
We have all mod cons in the house...Sky tv, dvd player, English tv, laundry room, there's even a table tennis table if you fancy a knock about.
The area is surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers in summer. Its lovely to take a walk among the vines and admire the work the farmers do to keep them perfect. We have a lovely village about 4 minutes drive away called Estang where there is a cafe, restaurant, baker, butcher, veggie shop, Post Office....pretty much all you need. But if you want a supermarket you can go to Cazaubon, Eauze, Nogaro, Air sur l"Adour or Mont de Marsan for big shops.
There is a motor racing circuit about 10 minutes away in Nogaro, the Paul Armagnac Circuit where they race cars, trucks, motor bikes etc. It's a good day out if you are a bit of a petrol head.
One of my favourite places is the Pic du Midi at Le Mongie about 90 minutes away where you can go up to 3000m in the cable cars to get the most amazing views of the Pyrenees. There's a restaurant up there too so you can eat and get a hot chocolate. It is chilly up that high though! + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
On a day to day basis the main job would be looking after and feeding the dogs. The gardens and paddock are large enough to walk around and play with them, as a big dog Buddy doesn't tend to walk too far...bad for his joints. He prefers to swim!
Depending on the time of year the grass would need keeping on top of, we have a ride on tractor mower for that. In summer the grass takes about 4 hours cutting per week, plus strimming and blowing. Previous knowledge of swimming pool maintenance in the summertime would also be really helpful as there’s some daily work required. Generally keeping the place as clean as you can do with four dogs...poop scooping is a necessary evil!!
