Sitters wanted to care for our furry kids and home!
Hi there! My name is Maren and my husband Trevor and I moved back to Germany in December 2016. Prior to that, we lived in Manhattan, Kansas in the US for over three years. We have quite the furry family consisting of four dogs and seven cats. We live in a small and picturesque town called Ohmden. Our little (big) family will only be here until December of 2019 before we make our way back to the US. In the meantime, we'd very much like to take advantage of Europe and get some traveling in.
Our Home & Location
The beautiful small town of Ohmden is located in the "Schwäbische Alb" region of Baden-Württemberg. It is known for its wonderful walkig and hiking trails, orchards and castles. Nearby is the castle ruin of "Teck", which one can get to by a longer and more elaborate hike, if you're into that (it does give you beautiful views and there's a restaurant up top!). Other than that there are many beautiful walking trails, forests and towns nearby to explore. One town is "Kirchheim unter Teck" which boasts with a historic city center where you can find old and traditional timber framed homes (Deutsche Fachwerkstraße). This style of building homes is very typical for this area of Germany. Furthermore, Kirchheim offers different entertainment and many great restaurants ranging from Italian cuisine to local, traditional foods such as Swabian "Maultaschen". If you're up for a bit of a drive, Stuttgart has many attractions including the Schlossplatz and its natural hot springs.
Responsibilities & Pets
Your responsibilities would include feeding everyone in the mornings (dogs always eat in their kennels), giving Koda his hypothyroidism meds in his food, letting the dogs out to the yard afterwards (Trixie goes on a long tie out cable because she is quite able to jump our low fence) and of course feeding the kitties (Oliver gets fed special dry food in the office) and cleaning the cat litter boxes. That is already pretty much it for the morning chores. In the meantime, the dogs go back inside their respective kennels for some down time with a chew treat or a stuffed Kong and the cats can have some play time with one of their pole toys, a laser pointer, catnip, etc.
The dogs should go back outside around midday, you can also play fetch or other games with them then. The evening routine is as follows: Cats get fed wet foos and Oliver once again gets special food in the office. The dogs are fed in their kennels, keeping in mind Koda's meds in his food. After mealtime, the dogs go back outside (don't forget Trixie's cable), or, if you'd rather do that, you can also take them for a walk (there are a few special considerations here, I'll get to thag in a bit)....
The kitty boxes also get another scooping in the evening. If you do want to walk the dogs (it is not necessarily required, especially if you don't feel comfortable doing that and since they have a decently sized yard), please use Koda's and Trixie's Gentle Leaders (you'll be glad you did!) and the harnesses for Jackson and Akiko. Akiko and Jack should be walked together and Trixie and Koda. Both Trixie and Akiko are leash reactive and can be unfriendly to stranger dogs, so avoid them at all cost and do not let them have "meet ups". Akiko's issues are more fear-aggression motivated, whereas Trixie's are more protective and dominance related. This is also why we lock them in their kennels (with treats and fresh water, of course) when they're not in the yard, we're not home, or we're sleeping. Having four dogs of various ages and backgrounds in the home can be challenging and this is why they rarely get to roam freely inside the house. As for the cats, they really enjoy evening couch/tv time cuddles and also receive a "pre-bedtime snack." This has two advantages: One, all the cats are in one room, so you can close the door to the hallway (trust us, you'll want to do that because they will otherwise "knock" on your bedroom door to wake you at 5:00am) and two, you can snatch up Hayley and lock her in the office with her snack/water. Hayley sleeps in the office because she can get overwhelmed by the others at night and this gives her a nice timeout. As far as home care goes, please just make sure the trash gets taken out and that loose litter/cat throw up/hair is picked up. Other than that, there's beautiful surroundings for you to explore here and you can definitely take some time to yourself/yourselves during the day :) + More info
