Autumn in the wine growing region of Hungary. Balaton uplands. Perfect for cycling and hiking. 3 dogs, 3 cats, 4 chickens
We are an English couple who accidentally moved to Hungary 4 years ago.
Greg works in the entertainment industry, and Rachael runs a small, UK based, business....
Our work leads us both to have to travel - sometimes together - and on these occasions we have to find someone to look after our 3 dogs (13 year old black Labrador, 7 year old Jack Russell X and 1 year old Daschund X), 3 cats (mogs) and chickens.
We enjoy cooking and eating good food, and good wine. + More info
Our Home & Location
The house consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge and a kitchen. There is a south-facing covered terrace where you can sit out from February to November comfortably. We have wifi, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer, TV from around the world via the internet/VPN etc. The house is heated with a Hungarian, tiled, wood burning stove. This feeds the radiators upstairs and underfloor heating downstairs. There is an additional wood burning stove in the lounge.
We have no air conditioning....
We have outbuildings that comprise of a wine cellar, an office, a stable and a summer kitchen with a workshop.
The garden has a small pool, a well, and outdoor cooking and eating facilities.
We also have a small allotment with a stream running through it.
We have considered the issue of child friendliness. Whilst we do have friends who visit with children, we are mindful that we have open stairs, an unfenced pool and open access to the cellar that has very steep stone steps. Please also bear in mind that while we have two bedrooms, we prefer our bedroom not to be used so a family would have to be prepared to share one bedroom (two double beds).
We live in a small village (150 people), surrounded by vineyards and ancient beech forest. Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Europe, is around 5km away. The nearest 'beach' for swimming is free and only a bike ride away. In the winter, there is ice-skating and ice-yachting on the lake.
There are various cycling and hiking trails that criss-cross the village. We have two road and two mountain bikes available for use.
The nearest town is Balatonfüred. This is 10km away. The beautiful Tihany peninsula is 8km away, and the famous spa at Heviz is an hours drive away, along the lake.
Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava are all 2 hours drive away.
The village has a small, well reviewed bistro and runs a summer cultural programme. It is served by a daily bread/cake van, a weekly frozen food van and a weekly grocers van. In the summer there is a daily watermelon hawker. + More info
