°°°°°° GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT US / THE SIT :
Hi, we are located in the heart of the Chianti region (Montespertoli, where some of the best wine is produced), 40 minutes from Florence, 1 hour from Pisa and Siena, 1,5 hours from Arezzo and 1,5 hours from the Tuscan Coast. We are a tiny family of 2 (myself, 50 , my son, 11) and our beloved rescue dogs. We lead a quiet life surrounded by nature, and are looking for dog & nature lovers who would like to spend between one and nine months in Tuscany (touring, reading, writing, studying, painting, resting... ) and help us with our dogs. We require someone to walk 3/4 dogs for 1,5 hours a day (in 1 o 2 outings), and to help with the garden (cleanup, watering, cutting grass). You will also be asked to feed the dogs if we are out. The rest of the time you are completely free to explore the area or enjoy the house and garden, at leisure.
Accommodation is offered in an independent, private and self-contained, cosy studio apartment (bedroom, kitchen, bathroom) in the back of our property. YOU WILL BE COMPLETELY SELF-SUFFICIENT and have your TOTAL PRIVACY but are also welcome to join us for a drink or meal, or to spend time in our extensive garden if you wish.
We are located in the countryside with no public transport. You will need to have a car while you are here. You may also, if you wish, experience Tuscany by bicycle; in this case we can arrange to take you shopping weekly. You would, in any case, need to provide your transport (car or bike).
FALL/WINTER/SPRING SITS (MID-SEPTEMBER TO MID-JUNE) : Sits are anywhere from one to 3+ months and involve walking 3 dogs for 1,5 hours a day (in 1 o 2 outings), and helping with the garden (cleanup, watering, cutting grass). You will also be asked to feed the dogs on occasion (not daily). The rest of the time you are completely free to explore the area or enjoy the house and garden, at leisure.
SUMMER SITS ARE APPROXIMATELY MID JUNE - MID SEPTEMBER and require care (feeding and cleaning after) of ALL 5 dogs for certain periods (of these, 4 dogs need walking, 1 enjoys an occasional stroll up the road but that is all -- she is handicapped and cannot go far). Additional responsibilities will include garden care. The rest of the time you are completely free to explore the area or enjoy the house and garden, at leisure.
Please contact us if you require additional information.
PS : You MUST have transport of some sort (we require a car for the summer sits as we will be away, with our car). Non-smokers preferred (or smoking outside), independent, responsible, child & gay friendly.
We can only host a maximum of 2 people at any given time, and CAN NOT accept any more dogs on the premises. Children (1) is welcome depending on the age (5+) and sleep with the parents/on a spare bed in the studio. Thank you

Our Home & Location
We are located in the countryside outside of Montespertoli, 30kms from Florence center. The area is called "Val di Pesa" and is stunningly beautiful. The closest big town is Empoli, but there are an infinity of quaint Tuscan towns to visit. SIena is an hour away and Florence is about 40 minutes. We are in a hamlet of 15 other families.
We have unlimited Fibre-optic wifi access, Wood-pellet central heating, solar-heated water supply (from March to October/November)....
The house is divided into two separate living spaces : the main house, which is where we live when we are in town, and the studio. Accommodation will be in one or the other as needed per sit and will be specified at the time of your application.
Please note that in the summer (or when we are away for extended periods) you can ADDITIONALLY spend time in the main house. If you would like to host guests for a few days while you are here (this is a recurrent request from sitters) you may do so during our absence with prior agreement. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
OUR DOGS : are all rescues from local kennels or other difficult situations. 2 of them are elderly and mostly require feeding, access to the garden and cuddles but no special care. One foster is a 3 legged rescue who is about 14yo and extremely quiet. The others are a quiet 10 yo Mid-size truffle-hunting dog (25 kgs), a 7 yo midsize mutt (18 kgs), 5 yo smallish (14 kgs) husky mix and last but not least, a one year old Italian Sheep dog (30kgs) who, despite her size is the embodiment of gentility and sweetness. The dogs all have access to a large (2000m) fenced garden which is divided into 4 areas so they can "stretch their legs". The puppy, and two "younger" dogs need walks daily, the 10 year old can do alternate days depending on how energetic he is feeling. During the school year (Sept - June), I will mostly walk the puppy and the sitter will walk the older dogs (10, 7 and 5 yos). The eldest dogs stay at home more enjoy the garden. As mentioned to me by previous sitters (references available on request), despite the number of dogs, with the exception of the puppy, the other dogs are actually very calm and happy to relax nap once they have had a satisfying walk. That done, you would be free to do your own thing in or out of the house. The dogs live indoors with us (they are very much part of the household!), including when we are out, and at night. They get along well, are sociable and friendly, both to humans and other dogs.
PETSITTERS PROFILE REQUIREMENTS :...
Responsibilities are :
- Walking 3/4 dogs 1,5 hours a day & cleaning up after them (15 minutes). The others stay home and enjoy the large garden.
- Feeding the dogs twice a day
- basic garden cleanup & maintenance
IDEAL CANDIDATES :
I am looking for people who have a good knowledge of basic dog care and the ability to recognize an ailment, should it arise and how to handle it (vet/no vet), as well as a good knowledge/appreciation for gardening.
Depending on the assignment, our proposed house/pet sit can suit a single or a couple who would like to spend some time in the Tuscan countryside while looking after the dogs and help to keep the garden tidy and in good health.
For shorter assignments, as we are out of town during these times we prefer an older (35/40+) couple who has "hands on" experience with dogs, particularly elderly dogs. Candidates should be easygoing, flexible, TRULY experienced with dogs (and love them!), detail oriented and have their own car. The ability to take initiative, be communicative yet independent are greatly appreciated qualities.
*********************- THE FOLLOWING APPLIES ONLY WHEN WE ARE OUT TOWN : The dogs can be left approximately 6 hours at a time on normal days. Occasionally, they can be left for up to 8 hours (if they are WELL walked beforehand), and it is possible to arrange with the neighbour/local dog sitter to come if you wish to be absent for longer on a specific day.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE :
TRANSPORT : I am frequently contacted by suitable candidates who, however, do not have access to a car. It is important to understand that I live in the countryside, without immediate public transport and thus a car is required, both practically and also in the event of an emergency (human or canine). My Italian insurance does not cover for third party drivers, plus, I often travel by car so use my car when I leave. Unfortunately, access to a car is non-negociable. I'm sorry to say that I will automatically decline all requests that cannot fulfill this requirement. Thank you for your understanding. :) + More info
