So if you’re house sitting in Mexico city, swing by Bago café or give San Miguel’s Lavanda café a try, or stop at A Page in the Sun if you’re house sitting in Puerto Vallarta - a bookstore and café in one. 

And for a spot that really goes the extra mile, be sure to check out the Coffee and Pet's Deli in Guadalajara where they’ll create a pooch face in your cappuccino foam.

Street antojitos come in all shapes and sizes with countless toppings and fillings, but some of the most popular include tacos, tlacoyos, gorditas, memelas, sopes and so, much, more.

And if history is your thing (and you love to eat, naturally), find a spot for some authentic tamales - a dish that dates all the way back to the time of Aztec, Mayan and Inca civilisations. 

Or, play it safe and get a taste of some local guacamole - it’s said to have been made by the Aztecs, too. And for something on the adventurous side, try nopales - young cactus leaves that have been eaten for centuries in South America in soups, salads and stews. 

And while you’re getting to know local Mexican fare, remember that our canine companions and feline friends can’t eat the range of the fruits, vegetables and spices that we humans can - so keep your tamales to yourself.

Local festivals

While a central part of Mexican culture is certainly the food, you can equally get a taste of the country while you’re house sitting in Mexico by checking out a local festival. 

Mexico is a country that loves a street festival, so while well-known celebrations like Día de Muertos, Independence Day and Guelaguetza Festival are great, be sure to check out any lesser-known cultural events you hear about from locals at the dog park or your nearby dog-friendly café. 

Art and archaeology 

House sitting in Mexico is perfect if you’re an art lover or you enjoy learning about cultures gone by. Head to the five-story Museo Jumex for contemporary art and cultural events. The MoMA of Mexico is home to works by Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Gabriel Orozco. 

And the Frida Kahlo Museum is another must-see if you’re house sitting in Mexico City. The collection is housed in Kahlo's own home and displays her photographs, furniture and art - an impressive collection for sure. 

And for a more contemporary collection, visit Kurimanzutto, where you’ll find post-nineties Mexican art. 

And for a slightly older art form, be sure to check out the country’s archeological sites if you’re nearby. From the world-famous Chichen Itza - a Mayan site thought to have been built between 600-750 AD, to Tulum, a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city and Edzna, it’s safe to say that Mexico isn’t short of historical attractions to marvel at. 

And rest assured, if you’re dog sitting in Mexico, you can take your new pal along to some of Mexico’s ancient sites, including El Tepozteco. The archeological site is perched at the peak of a mountain, so bring energetic pups along for the climb.
