Top care wanted for horses, dogs and cats in finca in countryside Southern Spain
My husband Andrew and I moved to southern Spain a couple of years ago from the Netherlands, and before that we lived in Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. We still have two elderly horses in Oz, and regularly travel down under to visit our boys and friends. As we now have our 2 mares living at home with us, and within 6 months of moving to Pizarra, 3 rescue puppies found their way into our home and hearts, going away now requires the help of dedicated pet sitters. Our next trip is scheduled for December this year, so if you are interested, please read on!
Our Home & Location
The house we live in, is a traditional renovated finca. It is situated about 20 minutes from the villages of Pizarra and Alora in the province of Malaga, high on top of a hill with the most amazing views over the valley to Alora. The home consists of 4 bedrooms and an office, 4 bathrooms (1 located outside), a kitchen and large living room. Heating consists of a log burner and (movable) gas heater in the kitchen, and a log burner in the living room. There will be plenty of firewood available, although you will have to get kindling and the dogs love to help with that!
All our water is bought from a water carrier, unless we get sufficient rain and the tanks fill up. Naturally any water bills will be our responsibility, but we do ask you to be water savvy please!...
This is country Spain, as we say ´campo campo´. The access road is tarmac to a certain point, after that it becomes a series of sand tracks with lots of stones and yes, potholes! The roads get very dusty in summer, and can get very boggy and wet in winter. A sturdy car or 4x4 is advised.
This is definitely not a populated district....there are a few holiday homes, and a shepherd across the road whom you may encounter with his flock during the day and who is always in for a chat.
There are 2 restaurants/bars ´nearby´ (10 min down the hill), situated almost next to one another. One is typically Spanish, the other run by lovely British people, with a great client mix of Spanish, English, Dutch and various other nationalities.
If you like hiking, this is the place to be! Pack a lunch, take the dogs, and enjoy the scenery. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Horse and dog experience is an absolute MUST. Our two Warmblood mares require feed 2 or 3 times a day. They live out on appr. 6 hectares of hilly land, but will need to be checked regularly for any injuries and treated if required. They are not stabled, nor rugged. They have access to the 2 open stables, (no bedding, concrete floor), which will have to be swept on a regular basis. The hay is stacked in the 3rd stable and the bales are heavy.
The three dogs get fed 2 or 3 times a day. They are mostly on a BARF diet, so you will have to cut up fresh meat daily and not be afraid to have to touch meaty bones. They are indoor-outdoor dogs (kitchen area only), also have the entire property available to them much of the day. They sometimes manage to find an escape route under the fence, which will have to be fixed with stones (and luckily there is an endless supply of those!). However, we regularly keep them in the patio area around the house/swimming pool area to give us and them some rest!...
The two cats came with the house....and get fed 2x day. They are not ´cuddle´ cats, but will enjoy your company. + More info
