Cats need patient, caring sitter
Hello! This is a first for us so my husband and I are understandably nervous about engaging a sitter. Until very recently either my parents, our grown up daughters or a kindly parishioner (my husband, Philip, is a Parish Priest) cared for our much loved cats. My parents are sadly no longer alive, our daughters have moved away and our friend is elderly and feeling vulnerable away from her own home.
I no longer work full time but am kept busy with a small craft business, teaching sugarcraft and also knitting and dressmaking. Both Philip and myself are avid readers (our guestroom houses a large and varied book selection) and love nordic walking and hiking. We don't have many opportunities to get away because of Philip's work, but when we can we like to get outdoors. We also have a (little used!) narrow boat.
Our Home & Location
We live in a vicarage at the top of a small hill in a relatively quiet part of Kingstanding, surrounded by mainly private housing and with a primary school across the road. (We live on one half of a crescent which has a green space separating us from the main road, and we are set back from the other houses so it is quite private. ) There is plenty of space in the house and I keep it very clean and tidy. The house has cctv which a prospective sitter could use if desired. The house is attached to the church centre which holds various activities during the week, none of which impinge on the privacy or security of the vicarage. We have a good sized, if slightly untamed, rear garden for some of our cats to enjoy and we get a wide range of birds visiting us. There is a garage and private drive for your car.
There are 4 bedrooms and a sitter would have the use of our double bed guestroom which has its own sink. There are both upstairs and downstairs toilets and a separate bathroom upstairs with a shower over the bath....
All our kitchen appliances have been recently replaced.. A keen cook will like our induction cooker and wide range of cookbooks (vegan, vegetarian and meat lovers selection plus lots of bread and cake baking books) We don't have a microwave or dishwasher however.
There is a frequent bus service into Birmingham (just 6 miles away) from bus stops close to the house. It takes about 15-20 minutes by car or 30 mins by bus to get to the city centre. We are about 5 minutes drive from Sutton Coldfield Naure Reserve which has lovely walks. There is also a swimming pool, several gyms and cinemas close by, plus the inevitable retail park which has an M & S Foodhall, Boots, Tesco Extra, Next etc. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Our home will be left as clean and tidy as possible. We would just ask a sitter to hoover before leaving and ensure the house is as found.
The cats would need feeding regularly and their litter trays keeping very clean. They are used to us being around for much of the time, but if a sitter needed to be out for periods of time then a neighbour would possibly help out with a daytime feed if necessary. They obviously enjoy company....
We have a mixed bunch with differing feeding requirements which would need keeping to as one cat has hyperthyroidism and is on an exclusive diet to maintain her health. Two of our cats are strictly indoor only. They MUST be kept out of the kitchen as one has learned how to follow the outdoor cats through the flap as they are going out!
The chickens would be left cleaned out with food and water. They like to potter about in the secure front yard for short periods during the day so it would be helpful if you could let them out and put them back in again later, usually in the morning (they'll let you know!) . A handful of dried mealworm or corn gets them in if they're reluctant! Other than that, it would just be a case of checking for eggs in their little henhouse and making sure their food and water lasts the week. + More info
