Eden Valley, Cumbria
We live in a converted barn in the village of Great Salkeld, about 6 miles from Penrith. The Barn, set in its own grounds/courtyard used to be part of a village farm until about 30 years ago. It is an upside down house, with the sitting room and kitchen upstairs to make the most of the views over the western slopes of the Pennines. Great Salkeld is a small village with around 200 houses, set on the hill above the river Eden. It has a very ancient church, which is one of the oldest in Cumbria, and one of very few churches with a Peel tower. Whilst we don’t have a shop in the village, there is a convenience store 2 miles away and plenty of supermarkets in Penrith, 6 miles away. There is a pub (The Highland Drove), just a few doors down from the Barn, serving excellent food and real ales. The north Lakes are only 8 miles away, so we are spoilt for wonderful countryside and great walks.
Our Home & Location
The house is a converted barn, set in its own grounds in a courtyard that leads into a garden and a paddock. It has 4 en-suite bedrooms, 3 downstairs . Upstairs is an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting room, plus a further en-suite bedroom. The house uses oil central heating (underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs) with a log burner stove in the sitting room. Whilst we are in the centre of the village, because we are set back from the road in a courtyard, and face the Pennines, we are also very private. The location, apart from enjoying beautiful views and countryside in the Eden Valley, it is also ideal for exploring the Lakes or Hadrians Wall area.
Responsibilities & Pets
We have 2 dogs (English Pointers) who are both friendly and gentle - they love just being with you. We also have 3 cats who, are both independent but also friendly and affectionate. This sitting would involve looking after the cats and the dogs.
