House and Dog Sitting in the Yorkshire Dales
We are John and Gill and have recently relocated to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and are semi-retired. We are still the part-owners of a mail order business based in Herefordshire and have some involvement in the company. Having recently purchased a camper van we are looking to take to the roads around the UK for some new adventures! We will be going on both short (2 night) and long ( up to 10 day) trips and will sometimes take one of the dogs with us.
Our Home & Location
We live in a 4 bedroomed home that is 300+ years old and have done a lot of renovation work on it in the last 18 months. It is in the pretty village of Bellerby which is just 1.5 miles from the market town of Leyburn at the end of Wensleydale. Leyburn has two small supermarkets, chemist, post office, bakers, butchers, gift shops and a good choice of pubs, restaurants, takeaways, cafes and tea rooms. There is a traditional market in the square every Friday.
Within easy driving distance are both the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors National Parks which offer great opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding and other outdoor activities plus great visitor attraction such as the Wensleydale Creamery, Black Sheep and Theakstons Breweries, Forbidden Corner, Jervaulx Abbey and Bolton Castle. The historic town of Richmond is a 15 minute drive away and in the other direction are the famous racehorse gallops at Middleham.
The house is centrally heated and well insulated, and there is a wood burner for additional heat in the winter months with logs provided. The cooker is an Everhot range cooker (similar to an Aga). Accommodation for the house sitter(s) is in a newly decorated room with a kingsize bed and ensuite shower room.
Responsibilities & Pets
Any potential house sitters need to be experienced with dogs as one of our Jack Russells is reactive and needs careful handling. We would want to meet and introduce sitters to the house and dogs prior to their first sit.
We have a large garden in which the dogs can exercise so daily walking is not an absolute must and in fact it is sometimes better for Jack not to go out too often in order to keep him calm and less reactive. Responsibilities include feeding and general care of the dogs, cutting the grass with a petrol lawn mower during the spring/summer months, watering the garden as appropriate, de-pooing the lawn, feeding the wild birds and keeping the house clean and tidy....
Our dogs can be left on their own indoors for up to 5 hours at a time giving sitters the opportunity to do some exploring of the local area if they wish. The dogs are fed at 6pm each evening and are used to going out in the garden for the last time at 10pm before going to bed. Two sleep in crates downstairs and the other sleeps on our bed and has been know to creep under the duvet of guests once he has got to know them!
This house sitting opportunity is not suitable for children or visiting pets. Non smokers preferred. + More info
