House and Parrot sitter/carer
Me and my partner like to go away for 14-15 nights each year and now need to find reliable housesitters to look after 2 of our Cockatoo's as our previous friend can no longer help. My partner works full time as an Architect Technician and I am a part time Admin Assistant. We are new to this site, if it works well we may even start going away more often. We do also have a pair of Lineolated Parakeets and another female Citron Crested Cockatoo, but they normally go off to other friends so the housesitters would not be over whelmed.
Our Home & Location
We live in a 3 bedroomed terraced house in a small village, we have a good sized garden with a large play avairy attached to the back of the house. We let the birds go outside when he weather is nice, but when outside we do keep an eye on them, in case they start squawking. When they are outside it does give you more freedom as you know they can't destory anything they are not allowed to chew i.e. furniture & walls. It also means you can enjoy the garden if the weather is nice and not worry about them too much.
Chobham is a lovely small village, it enjoys 25 miles of chobham common. There are places where you can go horse riding, great for the bird watchers and just general walking. We also have quite a selection of restaurants within about a 10 minute walk....
The only thing Chobham lacks is a good public transport network, so ideally you would need a car. Woking is about 5 miles away and has excellent train connections into London. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
You would need to make sure Suki and Oliver get fresh fruit and veg each day, as well some fresh seed. The drinking water is normally changed twice a day. Cages de-pooped, which involves a change of newspaper on the bottom and any poop on the perches wiped off.
Oliver's cage is covered at night, so he would need uncovering in the morning. Both birds enjoy a cuddle, although, especially of an evening. Oliver likes to go to bed around 7.30pm depending on what time you wake him up, Suki loves to sit and cuddle with you for the whole evening. They don' t mind being left during the day, but I do leave the radio on for them. As long as they get an evening of cuddle / attention instead....
Suki suffers from a health condition so does need medication in the morning and early evening, this is put on a small piece of toasted crumpet or Irish potato bread which she finds irresistible. Sadly she also suffers occasional fits but they are easy to deal with and don't last long, so you would need to be prepared for this, especially if she needed to see her avian vet. We no not envisage any trips to the vet would be required though, unless in some kind of emergency. This of course would be paid by us.
The rest is at your leisure, we just ask you to keep the house clean and make sure the birds are fully supervised when out of their cages inside the house. They know when you're not looking and take great enjoyment trying to chew what they are not allowed. They are typical, very mischievous Cockatoos.
It would be great to meet any potential house sitters before our holiday, especially to have the chance to introduce you to our pets. + More info
