We are 2 working women who are friends and colleagues and share a house. I work in London during the week and Dawn works locally but is working away both in the UK and overseas for most of February and early March and this is highly likely to continue throughout the year. I work for an Insurance Company and Dawn teaches Equine Facilitated Learning with her herd based locally in Minchinhampton - my horses are part of the herd. The herd of horses is taken care of in our absence as is Dawn's dog; which just leaves my dog, Dawn's parrot and 2 fancy rats.
During the dates when we are looking for sitters, I can come home or not as it suits you. The most important thing is that everyone is settled. I can stay in London during February for example or I can come home for a weekend if you want to take off for somewhere else. I am also available 24/7 to help with any issues (not that we are expecting any!).
Our Home & Location
The house is what I would describe as 'upside down' being built on the side of a hill. As you enter the house there is one bedroom (used for air bnb guests), a cloakroom with loo and basin and an open plan sitting/dining room and kitchen. The kitchen has a hob, double oven, combination oven/microwave and is generally quite well equipped. The outlook is very pretty and over the valley to the other side of the village. Downstairs, there are 3 bedrooms, a TV room/office and the bathroom which has a lovely, large shower but no bath as such.
The village - Avening, is a village of mixed housing, some old, some modern, some large houses, some small terraced houses. It's generally a well kept and quiet village. It doesn't have a shop but there is plenty of good shopping within relatively easy reach. You do need a car and there is off road parking for 2 cars (1 in front of the house)....
The nearest town is Tetbury which is very pretty and touristy. It does have a Tesco and Tesco Petrol. We tend not to go in that direction as much as we go towards Minchinhampton, Nailsworth and Stroud. Minchinhampton has a really excellent butcher as well as an organic Dairy and a small general shop. Nailsworth has a Morrisons, Hobbs Bakery, Tesco Express and various other small shops, Stroud has Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Tesco, a brand new Aldi and Farmers Markets. I really like Stroud which is quite a quirky town. It also has a mainline railway station and coach transport to London.
This is a really beautiful part of the world and there is a lot to explore! Cirencester is an interesting Roman town with a lovely little theatre. The walking is great and plentiful as is the golf. There is a wide selection of good country pubs and these will be included in the guide that I am working on at the moment. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Pip needs company, feeding twice a day and walking. She loves people, cuddles and her walks. She is usually out with the horses during the day so would need 2 walks a day instead - probably 30-45 minutes each but she would certainly walk for longer if you wanted to take her out. She's generally very well behaved, she's fit and strong so she's better with someone with dog experience. Pip was rescued a few years ago, she loves children and people but isn't good with cats and she's occasionally unfriendly with mainly large dogs. I would recommend keeping her on the lead but if you became a regular house sitter then I expect that would change. She takes medication for her skin and supplements for her arthritis.
Alfie needs feed and clean water every day and his tray needs changing every couple of days. He needs to come out and fly round the living room every day but is very good about returning to his cage especially if you get the timing of his (healthy) treats sorted. We've set the start dates to allow for some time with Dawn so she can explain Alfie's care in more detail - it's not complex. He does talk and he also mimics certain noises which can be both funny and unnerving!...
Cree and Loki are well handled fancy rats who are pleased to come out and be stroked. They need feeding once a day and water checking. They also need cleaning out once a week. Again, Dawn can give a demonstration before you take over.
If you were happy to welcome air BNB guests and change bedding that would be marvellous but it's absolutely not a problem if you would prefer not to. In our experience so far, people have been charming and no trouble. We don't feed them so it's just a bed and tea making facilities but no pressure to do this.
Putting out rubbish and recycling is required on a Wednesday night - details will be provided and generally keeping the house straight and clean. + More info
