Beautiful views in Southern Cotswold town and two lovely dogs looking for a sitter
We are both in our sixties and are now retired (Terry from HR and Maggie from Nursing), and are using the opportunity to travel, with and without our dogs. We have not used house sitters before but think it could be a good solution for dog and house care while we are away. We have used kennels and home-from-home care in the past , neither of which have been ideal. We love walking, music, football (Terry), reading, writing, good food and wine and spending time with our friends.
Our Home & Location
Our home is located on the outskirts of the small market town of Nailsworth in the Southern Cotswolds. It is a fifteen to twenty minute walk into the centre of town. The house is three bedroom detached with a secure terraced garden. There is a large kitchen/diner, utility room, sitting room and conservatory. There is a bathroom, en-suite shower room and additional toilets upstairs and downstairs.
There is gas central heating and hot water on a timer and two wood burning stoves. The cooker is electric with both an induction and halogen hob, there is a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. Details for operating all appliances and TV etc will be provided....
There is easy access to beautiful countryside with lots of great dog walks, many from the house, including Woodchester Park with it's lakes and mansion. Nailsworth is well served with a range of shops including supermarkets, butchers, bakers and independent shops. There are also restaurants, cafes and pubs, all of which are dog friendly (a couple in the garden only). There is no bank but there are three ATMs. Nearby Stroud has banks, more shops and several large supermarkets as well as a park with open air swimming pool (summer only!). The spa towns of Bath and Cheltenham are within easy reach and buses run from the centre of town. Other Cotswold towns such as the Roman town of Cirencester, Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water etc are an easy car journey away. Westonbirt arboretum is also close by, where there are lovely walks. There is a mainline railway station in Stroud.
We have very good neighbours who can be called on if needed (their details will be available) + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Both dogs are fed on raw meat, it comes in 250g frozen packs, which needs to be taken out to defrost the evening before. Bobby has 3/4 of a pack twice a day and Benjie has a 1/4 twice a day. They have a piece of raw chicken wing sometime in the morning. They also have biscuits and treats. Their routine is fairly flexible, but if they are at home they start looking for their tea early, they have it at 4pm unless out. We do agility every week with both dogs, which tires them out (we wouldn't expect sitters to do agility with them).
They sleep in the kitchen at night and are left in the kitchen when alone. We try not to leave them for longer than four hours at a time.
Bobby is a typical energetic working cocker who loves chasing his ball, he only has it on the common, otherwise he would want to chase it all round the house! He is good off his lead, where it's safe and is very responsive when called. He pulls a bit on the lead and needs to be reminded to keep close. He loves water and jumps into any he finds, even the cattle toughs on the commons. He needs at least one good walk/run off the lead a day and usually another walk around the roads, into town etc. He is very food orientated and can be a thief if you don't keep an eye on him, he is also a scavenger when out (we try to stop him eating rubbish). He can get agitated and bark, usually when he wants something but does respond to a firm 'no'. He loves his toys and always brings one for you when you come home. He loves to snuggle up on the sofa in the evenings....
Benjie is a little character, he loves other dogs and when off the lead runs to greet everyone he sees. He isn't as responsive as Bobby at coming when called, although he always does return. He doesn't need as much exercise as Bobby but will keep up, sometimes Bobby has an extra walk on his own. Benjie is a lap dog and loves to sit on a knee, although he is quite independent. His coat is very curly and needs to be brushed every couple of days (he hates it). He goes to the groomers regularly and luckily his coat doesn't knot. He is sometimes unsettled at night in new situations but usually settles with a cuddle and told to stay in his bed. He sometimes gets jealous of Bobby, usually when are settled down for the evening, and does what we call a 'squeak attack'. We put him out in another room for a couple of minutes when he does it. + More info
