Pet & House Sitting in Bury St Edmunds
We're Holly and Joe. Recently married and we live in Bury St Edmunds. We have no kids (yet!) and we love to travel and take our boy (Rufus, our Bernese Mountain Dog who's just turned 1) whenever we can. We've had him since he was 8 weeks old - we actually met him at 2 days old - and we got him from a breeder in France when we spent a year living out there and developing a family property. He's very much part of the family and when we do have to go away and it's not possible to take him, we'd much rather he gets to stay in his home than put him in kennels or anything else.
He's a beautifully natured dog, gets on with everyone and everything. Kids, cats, dogs, rabbits, you name it. He was socialised very well from a young age and has no issues in terms of temperament. That said, he's still a young (and very large!) dog so needs experienced and confident dog sitters. If you know anything about Bernese Mountain Dogs then you'll know that owners say you get an overgrown puppy for the first three years! He's obedient, well mannered and well trained but he's a young dog that still occasionally wants to try and push the boundaries and often forgets that he's about 50 kilos now - so when he has a mad 5 minutes or goes into puppy 'zoomie' mode he's quite a sight to behold!...
You'll also need to be ok with getting stopped in the street, people asking to take selfies with him and generally making a fuss - he tends to get attention wherever he goes!
We're looking for sitters that are real 'dog people', experienced and active. He doesn't actually require a massive amount of exercise - just 30-60 mins a day is plenty, but he still has certain cheeky puppy characteristics so unattended shoes or TV remotes can easily end up in the garden being chewed if left!
He's genuinely a pleasure to be around and live with, but he does require a bit of input to keep him out of mischief! + More info
Our Home & Location
We live in a 4 storey, 4 bedroom Victorian town house within easy walking distance of the centre of historic Bury St Edmunds. The house is spacious with an enclosed private rear garden with a lovely terrace / patio and permit parking to the front. We have all the mods cons as you would expect. High speed fibre wifi, underfloor heating throughout, multiple en suite showers and WCs, we even have a "man cave" in the basement with 4k UHD wide screen TV and Sonos surround system (and a dart board should you fancy it!) and there's a lovely walk-in shower and jacuzzi bath in the main bathroom. The kitchen is excellently equipped with a large Smeg range cooker, microwave, wine cooler, fridge freezer, butler sink and an amazing 'bean-to-cup' coffee machine that we couldn't live without!
Bury St Edmunds train station is a 6 minute walk and the town centre / Angel Hill is about the same....
You don't need a car to sit for us - there are plenty of lovely walks in and around the house, but there are some even better ones a short drive away if you do have a car that Rufus can fit in that would give you more options. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Essentially it's pretty simple - feed, walk and play with Rufus!
He eats twice a day, morning and evening. He gets at least one walk a day for a minimum of 30 minutes but normally more like 45-60 mins and he'll take all of the attention, games of tug and cuddles that are on offer....
Obviously there's the less pleasant side of dog ownership - i.e. clearing up after him in the garden each day, but other than that he's quite low maintenance.
We both work, so he's quite happy to be left for a few hours (he'll just sleep!) but we never leave him all day.
He travels well in the car and is totally used to both short and longer journeys (he's travelled with us to France on a number of occasions) so you can take him on any adventures you wish! + More info
