Hi, my name is Carol and currently I have one dog, two cats, a house and a husband who are all dearly loved in that order!
We have usually taken a couple of overseas holidays a year and have in the past had a very reliable house sitter who has now unfortunately retired; thus the reason we are looking for another....
I have also been a house sitter for several years and understand the responsibilities and associated rewards of doing the job.
I am looking for a reasonably energetic person/couple who are experienced dog handlers as although Vera is trained when playing can be boisterous. + More info
Our Home & Location
This is a rural location, car required (no street lights or pavements) and we live in a 16thC partly thatched cottage on Mellis Common, which is 59 hectares of nature reserve.
There are miles and miles of different walks on lanes, footpaths and common land.
The natives are friendly especially if you are walking a dog.
The historic town of Eye 3 miles away has a post office, butchers shops, co-op, bakery, chemist, flower shop, besides all sorts of individual little businesses, to include beauty salon, hairdresser and chocolate shop....
The market town of Diss is 5 miles away, a larger town, population 7,500 approximately with three supermarkets, two garages and a plethora of other shops.
Bury St Edmund's a very pretty historic market town is 18 miles away with an Abbey, Abbey gardens, museum, historic architecture and good shopping.
The medieval city of Norwich is also 18 miles away with many more attractions; castle, cathedral, huge marketplace to name a few.
Back home to Mellis, and within 10 minutes stroll or 5 minutes walking at my pace, we have a pub! Yes we are lucky to have The Railway Tavern with Frank our publican who also serves good food, has varied musical evenings and usually a local art exhibition in one of the rooms. You will be made very welcome.
If you Google the area you will be able to identify your specific interests.
We are currently looking at renovating this house putting in a new en-suite shower room to the guest bedroom and renewing our bathroom upstairs. Downstairs we need to make alterations to the current layout making room for a hall with toilet etc. This is hopefully starting in the new year so we will be moving into the Old Stables, an annexe we converted from stables a couple of years ago. It is probably better appointed at the moment than this house.
The annexe consists of a large double bedroom with en-suite shower room, utility room with separate WC ,washing machine, fridge freezer and large kitchen/lounge diner with wood burning stove.
The annexe is where you will be staying if you would like to come and look after the gang.
There is plenty of parking space and the garden has two secure areas for dogs.
I could go on and on but I think you may lose the will to stay awake; thank you for your interest and I hope to hear from you. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Vera is strong dog and needs to know who is pack leader; very friendly and can be exuberant/clumsy. She walks to heel on the lead, sits, lies down, comes etc to command. Vera will need walking twice a day, for a minimum of 30 minutes each walk; she would be delighted if it was more. She is fed twice a day with raw meat.
She should not be left alone for more than 4 hours....
Both cats feed from the same bowl of dried food which is topped up once a day.
They also share a couple of litter boxes which will need cleaning on a daily basis.
Prudence is the only cat who will come to you voluntarily, she is very friendly. Mary is exactly the opposite, extremely wary of everyone and will hide away all day.
Other than to spend 5 minutes brushing Prudence on a daily basis, there are no other responsibilities for the animals.
Wheelie bins need taking to the end of the drive on a Sunday evening and if the post could be taken in daily from the outside mailbox, that concludes our requirements.
I will consider a first time sitter if they are experienced dog handlers. + More info
