Rural Ridgeback lovers
We are a semi retired dentist and nutritionist. Two of our daughters now live abroad, so we’re hoping to find a couple experienced with these adorable dogs while we visit them.
Our Home & Location
We are very lucky to live in a sought after village between Marlborough and Hungerford. Surrounded by beautiful Wiltshire countryside, spoilt for walks, good pubs, pretty towns and historical monuments such as Avebury and Stonehenge an hour away. The village has a shop, post office, 2 pubs and doctors surgery. We are on the edge of the village but have neighbours quite close by. The house is a mix of traditional thatched cottage and contemporary, featuring full length windows overlooking the garden with a stream which attracts lots of wildlife. Everyone feels very relaxed when they stay as the setting is so idyllic. The house has a very calming atmosphere and is finished to a high standard with good quality beds, linen etc.
Responsibilities & Pets
Our main priority is for you to love and care for our pets while we’re away. Ridgebacks are unusual dogs, they are protective, loving and loyal to their family and can be aloof or unsure of others unless we have accepted them, then they are treated like family. Ted is very cuddly and expects to be cuddled on the sofa watching tv despite being 45kgs! They need 1-2 hours exercise a day and sleep the rest. They are never left more than 4-5 hours, however, arrangements could be made with our neighbour if a longer day exploring was required without the dogs. Experience with large hounds would be helpful, they instinctively want to chase wild animals but have been trained to a whistle to control this. They don't chase sheep or birds. If it's easier they can stay on leads. Due to their size, other dogs can be defensive so we always put them on leads if other dogs are around. If you have a hatchback car you're happy for them to go in, there are wilder walks close by where we rarely see anyone. They are used to a busy house including young children and love to play.
The house has been recently extended and renovated, it’s quite large but is easy to look after. Apart from some watering in the summer the garden is looked after a gardener once a week. We have a robotic lawn mower, so no grass cutting required!
