February escape to the country
We have an extra large, needy dog (Russian Black Terrier), a very special and well-behaved Standard Poodle puppy (he will be 8 months in Feb), two cats and two guinea pigs; all in need of company and care for a week in February 2019.
We are a family of five, with three young children. Usually the house is full of noise and laughter (or screams!), but once we are away, this is the most tranquil place to be....
The dog, Bessie, is 7 years old, absolute winner of everyone she meets; really enjoys human company. Note that she is needy and doesn't like being on her own for long. Probably 3 hours max. Because of the size and nature of this breed we would really like to find a person, or a couple, who are experienced in handling big dogs. No children, simply because Bessie can get too excited with children around and may attempt to split any play-fighting or running around. Although she is absolutely fine and happy with all our family, I would rather keep her around adults only whilst we are away.
Rufus is our new family member and needs people around him too. He is on his best behaviour most of the time and Bessie looks after him too. He is energetic and very responsive, gentle and cuddly. He is not allowed on the sofas - even though he may tell you otherwise! He is fully toilet trained and there are no accidents around the house, but please keep the bin shut!
We are happy to accommodate two couples, but insist that all are non-smokers. Also, probably worth mentioning that our two cats are hunters and sometimes may bring in mice and rabbits that are no longer alive. + More info
Our Home & Location
Our 300 year old thatched cottage is located in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, adjacent to organically farmed fields, Wiltshire. Ideal for scenic country walks on Salisbury Plain or to an old country pub, after which, a roaring wood fire and warm AGA will welcome you home.
Once you have exhausted the local step-out-of-the-house walks spotting sheep and wild life on Salisbury Plain, you are spoilt for choice for many beautiful walks within 30mins drive radius. Although worth mentioning that to drive with the dogs you will need a boot big enough to fit them both in....
Stonehenge and Avebury stone circle sites are both within 20 min. drive. Old Sarum also offers an impressive dog-friendly visit for history lovers. Salisbury with its famous Cathedral is 45 mins away. Devizes market town and Marlborough, both are within 20 mins drive. A number of White Horses, Kennet Canal, Savernake forest and many more sites are all within your exploration radius.
The 0.5 acre garden surrounds the house and requires minimal attention. The house is detached and is located within a small friendly village, which includes a small primary school, church and a village hall. The closest shop and two pubs can be reached by a 20min walk across the fields, or 5 minute drive in the car.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, has an AGA and a back up double oven with an induction hob. You would be staying in the guest bedroom with a double sofa-bed, other bedrooms are available too.
We ran a successful holiday let business from this house just a few years ago, the visitors' book is still available to browse through if you need suggestions for outings. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Taking Bessie and Rufus for a walk once a day, feeding them twice a day. Cats are fed on request, guinea pigs twice a day, making sure all animals have drinks.
Rufus likes playing games or any stimulation, any contact with both dogs would be enthusiastically received....
You may observe animal politics quite quickly at our house. Everyone loves Bessie. Cats hate Rufus. Cats hate each other. Rufus loves everybody. Bessie just wants to have her own space. Swinda (tabby cat, Astrid's daughter) lives in the 'cottage' end of the house. Astrid (white cat) rules the main house. Cats pee in dogs' water bowl. Cats love humans. Bessie guards everybody. + More info
