Golden October in glorious Cornwall with super friendly animals
We are seeking an animal-loving, capable and uncomplicated house/animal sitter(s) for October half term (Friday 19th October to Sunday 28th October). October is a lovely time of year to be in Cornwall - it's often still quite warm and no crowds at all - so how about spending it in an idyllic countryside Cornish cottage with some lovely animals and delicious fresh organic eggs every day?
We are a family with 2 children and live in Mawgan on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. Our cottage is a three-bedroom traditional cob cottage from 1860, which we have renovated into a really special, healthy and eco-friendly place. We have a small menagerie of adorable animals (two Oriental cats, one black Labrador, 3 rescue donkeys and a bunch of friendly hens) that needs looking after while we're away....
We are looking for someone who is keen to spend time with the animals. Experience and/or love of Oriental/Siamese cats would be great - they are somewhat different to normal cats and need lots of loving! And someone who enjoys a nice long walk with the dog please! The beaches are all open again after the summer and wonderful dog walks on the beach beckon.
If you think you'd love to come stay here in October we very much look forward to hearing from you! + More info
Our Home & Location
Our cottage is a typically Cornish cob cottage just outside the pretty village of Mawgan-in-Meneage. The Helford River of Daphne du Maurier fame is within walking distance and a whole spectrum of different beaches are only 10 minutes' drive away in each direction. Mawgan is great because it has the best-stocked village shop we've ever come across - fresh organic bread, fresh crab, great local fruit and veg and Cornish specialties. Mawgan also has a really good food pub called The Ship Inn. Both shop and pub are easily reachable on foot. Otherwise you do need a car if you want to visit places (much as we'd like to, we unfortunately can't lend one due to the unnecessarily complicated insurance situation in the UK).
The market town of Helston (Tesco and Sainsbury's) is a 10-minute drive away and Falmouth (great small shops) and Penzance are both half an hour away. Kynance Cove (one of the Cornwall's most beautiful beaches and on sunny days more like the Aegean than England) is 20 minutes away. Or there's Church Cove - a glorious National Trust beach with a church actually on the beach. The only place in England where you'll see this apparently. But there are so many nice beaches nearby, we still can't decide which is best....
The cottage itself has been lovingly and sympathetically restored by us in accordance with ecological principles (lots of sheep wool insulation and natural materials!). Richenda is an interior designer and has put lots of attention to detail into the place, including super comfortable mattresses throughout. No anonymous Ikea rooms here! We have put in a glorious bathroom with bathtub and walk-in rain shower. We also have a special water filter and energiser, which provides spring-quality water to every tap in the house. Please note, however, that this sit is best suited to a single person or a friendly couple as you will be sleeping in our guest bedroom and the bed is 4 foot / 120 cm in width - lovely and roomy for singles, cosy but absolutely doable for couples!
We have an AGA in the kitchen and a cosy wood burner in the sitting room. Outside there are 8 acres of land adjoining the house, including some lovely woodland to walk through and a big field for the donkeys. We're also right next to Trelowarren with its lovely New Yard restaurant, pool and spa.
This is a very special place indeed. It is totally quiet at night except for the hooting of owls. Even though we are walking distance from the village, it is extremely dark and you get amazing starry nights. There is no WLAN smog (unless you choose to turn it on) and with the spring water, this is a super healthy place to be. In short: It's magical here! + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
We are looking for a sensitive and caring person/people who love(s) animals – especially cats, dogs, donkeys and hens.
We have two glorious Oriental boys, one blue, one lilac, who are exceptionally cuddly and need people around them as they're still young. They are real bundles of energy and super fun to be around....
Masala the dog needs lovely long walks every day. She is a very cuddly dog and if you sit on the rug in front of the fire, she would love to cosy up with you. Otherwise she is very easy and well trained. We usually don't have her on the lead, as she stays next to you.
The donkeys need their water checked daily and cuddles and carrots/apples on demand.
The hens need letting out in the morning and shutting in at dusk as we have foxes close by in the woods. The hen house needs a clean every morning and eggs need collecting in the afternoon, which you are welcome to have for breakfast, lunch and supper. We sell any eggs we don't need outside our front gate.
Otherwise it's just making sure the house is kept safe, locked up and windows closed when you're away, and clean and tidy for when we return. + More info
