Independent cat and chickens in Hunsdon
I am a self employed ecologist specialising in bat conservation. I frequently work for charities such as Operation Wallacea which are based outside of the UK, undertaking research and training to students. These trips are typically two weeks to up to 2 months.
Our Home & Location
My home is located in the village of Hunsdon, situated at the border of Hertfordshire and Essex. The property is a one up- one down 16th Century terrace cottage. The immediate amenities are the local post office but the village is not far from neighbouring towns of Ware, Harlow and Hertford, which can be reached by a bus service (although this is fairly infrequent 1/hour). There are several RSPB reserves within a short distance and plenty of walks/trails. The house is also within a short distance of London - 30 minute train journey gets you into Liverpool street; 20 minutes to Tottenham Hale, where you can connect to the Victoria line into London.
Responsibilities & Pets
The cat (Palomita) is a fairly new resident to the household and was obtained from the cats protection league in Jan 2018. She is very independent and spends most of her time outdoors. She is a hunter and will unfortunately bring in a regular array of gifts mostly voles, shrews and birds.
The bantams (Amanda, Tonto and Apache) are free ranging and have an automatic door on a time to let themselves out and closes at night. The girls do get very broody at times and need to be encouraged to leave the coop to feed and drink. The cockerel can be a little noisy but usually only for short times in the morning and afternoon . He has a collar to help minimise his "doodling"....
The fish include scissor-fish, guppies, plecs, and shrimps. The tank is able to maintain itself for quite long periods without cleaning. + More info
