Two weeks pet and garden sitting in Old Rectory in West Norfolk
We are Peter and Lorna - we own a lovely Old Rectory which we did up in West Norfolk. I (Lorna) work in London during the week but Peter is luckily retired and looks after the nearly 2 acres of garden and the animals. We both work/ed in music so the house has lots of vinyl and CDs - from rock to classical. We love gardening and when we go on holiday we like ideally to get someone who can look after a minimum of the cat and do watering of our two greenhouses and big veg patch - and we always seem to go away just when the strawberries are ready so housesitters always get to eat the best of them :-) Ideally as Edward Otterhound is getting older we'd prefer to have someone who can handle a big dog too as he is fine in kennels but it's nicer for him if he can stay at home.
Our Home & Location
Our home is a Victorian (1860) Rectory - next door to a beautiful 13th Century church. It is set away from the road in 2 acres of gardens (some bits wilder than others). We have lots of wildlife and feed the birds at least daily - we have resident rooks, pheasants, owls, woodpeckers etc. It has 4 bedrooms (two are ensuite with their own shower rooms), a family bathroom. Only 3 of the bedrooms are actually used as bedrooms as the fourth is currently my office but it does have a sofa bed in it. The house has 3 reception rooms and also a large family eat in kitchen with an electric range and a wood burning Rayburn. The village is a small (700) village with a pub (not a fancy one and no food) and a fish and chip & kebab shop. We are right on the River Great Ouse and there is lots of lovely walking around here. We are also a 2 minute drive from Watlington where there are more facilities (shop, pub with food etc) and a train station direct from London Kings Cross. The nearest towns are lovely Historic King's Lynn and Downham Market. We're also 20 minutes drive from the North Norfolk coast and the delights of seaside resorts like Hunstanton and 30 minutes from the posh places like Burnham Market, Wells-next-the-Sea, Holkham with the most amazing beaches and walks.
We have all the facilities you'd expect - fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher etc, a washing machine, tumble dryer (all in a downstairs cloakroom/utility room), full Sky subscriptions for the tellies in the living room and my office - including full SkyMovies, SkySports, BTSport etc. We have amazingly got BT Infinity wifi - and it works really well. We don't have children so the house is full of quite valuable antiques and art so that would be something to bear in mind but we're not house proud as we have an Otterhound! We have a cleaner who comes on Wednesday mornings every week too.
Responsibilities & Pets
Responsibilities are dealing with a stubborn old Otterhound - he likes a walk about 7/7.30 for about 30 minutes then breakfast then another walk about 9.30 for an hour - after that he is fine to be left for the day but needs to be fed at 6. He goes out down the meadow we have for a couple of minutes last thing at night before bed. He is very friendly and lazy but if he doesn't stick to his routine he is not happy! We have part of the garden around the house fenced off so he can wander around off the lead when you're there. He is walked on lead as he is a scent hound and absolutely cannot be trusted off. He isn't allowed anywhere other than the fenced garden off lead. The cat is no trouble (apart from being a typical naughty kitty). Very simple feeding/watering/stroking/trying not to get your fingers bitten routine. She is a bit of a hunter so you may have an occasional dead shrew. The only other duty is to keep the house safe and water the garden and feed the wild birds.
