House and hound in beautiful Malvern, Worcestershire
Isla and I are looking for someone to look after our house and dog whilst we're away. We got Toya, a rescue retired trailhound, in August 2017 and she hasn't enjoyed staying in kennels so we thought we'd give this a try. She's a great dog, very (very) affectionate but she can also be quite nervous in unfamiliar places so we think she'll much prefer staying at home (and she's also fine in pubs!). Isla and I are in our mid (OK, late) 30s, she's a teacher and I'm an accountant, and we like to be outdoors as much as possible which suits Toya just fine - she used to spend her days racing over the fells of the Lake District. We are lucky enough to live in Malvern, Worcestershire, with some fantastic countryside right on our door step and with easy access to Worcester, Birmingham, the Cotswolds and the Brecon Beacons. We live in a 4 bed semi which needs very little looking after.
Our Home & Location
We live in Malvern, a Victorian spa town in Worcestershire. We have a 4 bed, 2 bathroom home which, like a lot of the homes here, is situated on the Malvern Hills so the road gets a bit steep. We have fast broadband as well as a dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier and cosy living room with an open fire so everything you need to make yourself at home. Malvern is a lovely town, or at least we like to think so, being surrounded by fantastic countryside but also well connected, and having all the local amenities that you need. We have a great theatre and cinema, which attracts the main touring shows, as well as the Malvern Splash swimming pool and Manor Park sports club which has tennis, squash and bowls, both outdoor and indoor. There are Waitrose, Morrisons and Lidl supermarkets as well as an out of town retail centre with a large M&S, Boots etc. Our home is 20 minutes walk from Great Malvern town centre, where there are plenty of pubs, shops, cafes and restaurants, and only 10 minutes walk from the best pub in town, the Nags Head, which has previously won the best pub in Britain. We are also 15 minutes walk from Malvern Link train station which has direct trains to Worcester (10 minutes), Birmingham (45 minutes), Hereford (30 minutes) and the Cotswolds (1 hour).
Responsibilities & Pets
Our home doesn't need much looking after but being of racing stock Toya likes a lot of exercise. During the working week we typically walk her for an hour in the morning and she then has a dog walker come in for another hour during the day. Her evening constitutional might be another half an hour or more and then we also pop out with her just before we go to bed as she unfortunately refuses to 'go' in our garden (we've tried!). We know it sounds like a lot but we also do it because we enjoy it and she doesn't actually require as much as we give her. We would be happy to keep the dog walker coming whilst we're away in order to allow you time to explore the area, Toya loves her to bits and it's nice for her to socialise with the other dogs, but if you really like walking then they're very flexible. If you're into running you're in luck too, Isla often goes out with her and Toya loves nothing better. She is fully house trained and if she's not walking she's usually asleep so is very easy going at home. She's incredibly friendly once she gets to know you (which takes about 30 seconds) and isn't afraid to use her tongue to show it. She's not great at walking on the lead but this is only needed when near a road. Her recall is pretty good and she doesn't tend to wander off too far anyway, particularly round here as she knows the area so well. She's also fine around sheep, cows etc, another product of growing up in the Lakes.
