Beth, John and Lily the cat.
John's a retired academic, and Beth retired a few years ago from a career in higher education policy, and now works with her passion, swimming. We had 3 dogs and two cats for many years, and this meant that we were never able to leave home together. Now we find ourselves down to one cat, and more able to travel together, especially to places where Beth can swim! We have only just become aware of trustedhousesitters (wish we'd known about it before!), but are pleased to be joining this community.
For the sit we're currently showing in September, we do have a sitter, but, as we have been badly let down three times this year by sitters pulling out at the last minute, somehow, we feel we might need to hedge our bets a bit, so we would love to hear from you if you might be able to be a backstop for us. Just get in touch, anyway, as we're sure to have other opportunities coming up on our next trip.
Our Home & Location
Our home is a 16th century Welsh long house on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons. It's 4 miles from the nearest village, is remote and quiet with big rooms and garden. As you can see from the pictures, it's pretty much on its own, although we have very good farming neighbours. If you like peace and being away from the hustle and bustle, this could suit you. The nearest towns are 16 miles away, so you need a car and to be pretty self-sufficient and happy to be alone.
The house is warm and comfortable, with lots of stone and beams, but all mod cons, and good wifi. We grow a lot of veg and fruit in our big garden. There are fields of sheep and cows (not ours), woods and mountains all around, and a public footpath runs right through the property, so it's perfect for walkers. Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Corn Du and the Black Mountains are within easy reach by car....
We have solar water heating and photovoltaic panels, and our own water supply, and we like to be as organic as possible in our garden. While most of the house has been modernised, there are still a few parts which have survived our attempts to bring it into the 21st century, so it is a bit quirky, but we think in a good way! + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Lily is sweet-natured and loves company, brushing, lying on a warm lap, snuggling up on the bed at night, cuddles and the odd game. She just needs food and fresh water.
In summer, we might ask you to water our vegetable plot, and greenhouse and we have some ingenious water systems for doing it, including an old sheep dip, and some interesting hose pipe arrangements. The watering can take up to an hour a day, and would include carrying watering cans around. We might also ask you to pick some produce (and eat it).
