Experienced dog friendly sitters required for Penperlleni ( Monmouthshire) barn, set in beautiful location, non smokers please
We are a retired couple aged 60, we love our home and dogs, most of our holiday times are spent with the dogs but we also want to do more exploring and make ‘cultural ‘ visits where having dogs is made very difficult . We prefer not to use kennels hence the ‘housesitting’ Option is attractive,we have in 2018 decided to give housesitting ‘a go’. We also keep 8 chickens , which we also love and request these can be fed as well , obviously the house will be more secure whilst occupied
Our Home & Location
We live in a converted barn, just outside of Penperlleni in rural Monmouthshire. The barn is adjoined by the converted farmhouse and another barn, with which we share a central courtyard. Our neighbors are lovely, friendly, helpful but totally non intrusive.
We are lucky to have wonderful panoramic views over the valley, from the patio, kitchen and lounge we see a changing seasonal vista of sheep and lambs in season who graze our acre field, our chickens, horses in the opposite 2 fields, cows and lots of birds, including regular sightings of buzzards and the occasional sparrow hawk.
Our barn is an open plan conversion, roomy and homely.
The lounge has very comfy sofa, the TV has SKY. Sitters will use the guest bedroom downstairs which has a nice view and shower room on suite, of course you can also use the adjoining full bathroom with bath and shower if you prefer. The kitchen is large, totally functional, fully equipped with 2 freezer/ fridges, Rangemaster and every pot and pan you could ask for.
Wireless internet is a reasonable speed, we can both surf the internet and stream movies at the same time with no issues.
Heating is via underfloor heating.
We have 1 room we utilise as an exercise/ yoga/ Pilates room, it’s a nice space , has a selection of light weights and bands and has a nice view if you get tired .
We spend summer outside on 1 of the 2 patios, we have a Weber BBQ and outdoor tables and chairs.
There is extensive parking space.
We believe our home is cosy and comfortable.
A car is ESSENTIAL if you sit here and will HAVE to be big enough to transport the 2 labs....
Penperlleni is a small village with a Spar, nice local pub serving food and a fish and chip shop.
The big highlight of the area we live in, is the spectacular surrounding countryside, easy and simple access to the various stretches of the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal, which really is beautiful, Goytre Wharf with its lovely cafe is just 25 minutes walk away. Also, lovely woodlands like Wentwood forest, river walks at Usk-(the Usk valley walk is fabulous)and Bailey fields by the river at Abergavenny, make joyful walks. Local mountain walks are close by, Blorenge, Skirrid and Sugar Loaf are nice slightly challenging walks but rewarding. Most of the walks however are on the flat, totally relaxing and wonderfully scenic-allowing ‘mindfulness’.
Within 30 minutes drive( many much closer) are some wonderful restaurants and gastropubs including Michelin starred venues, the Walnut Tree is world famous,if that rocks your boat. Many lovely country pubs abound and the towns of Usk and in particular Abergavenny and Crickhowell are great places to visit and eat in ( we can make recommendations). Despite being rural, large supermarkets are available within 15 minute car ride we have Waitrose, Morrisonsx2, Tesco, Sainsbury’s,Asda and of courseLidl and Aldi, all so close, yet we live in the countryside! Newport is 20 minutes away, Cardiff 40 minutes away and Bristol 50minutes. Cwmbran train station enables access to the whole rail network and is 10 minutes from the barn.
The West Wales to Manchester and North Wales railway lies at the bottom of our ‘valley’, makes interesting viewing especially when we get ‘steam trains’, we have seen the ‘Royal Scotsman’ go past on a number of occasions! We now look for advance warning of these occasions, seeing a steam train go by, sitting on your patio is a very special experience.
In summary, we live in a comfortable home in a lovely location, in a county that is often overlooked, despite having wonderful natural attractions. That of course has advantages because it’s SO quiet and uncrowded + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Feed, water and walk dogs, dogs can be walked in the adjoining fields ( on lead if sheep present) or preferably along the local canal paths ( very close- selection of lovely routes) but car needed to transport to canal,we walk them twice a day, but one walk would be acceptable ( minimum 60 minutes daily).chickens need to be fed corn daily as a treat, their staple food- pellets is done via a feeder that is chicken activated, feeding is fun, they queue up! And if you want, at least 3 of the ‘girls’ will eat from your hand and you can collect eggs for you to enjoy, we leave coop door open unless it is freezing. The Labs are lovely, molly likes her own space, meg who is a ‘therapy dog’ adores pats and cuddles,,they are affectionate pets who are used to having us around most of the day. The dogs can be left at home alone for a maximum of 5-6 hours if need be.
In summer time, if it is dry, we would request that you water the pots on the patio
