Walk the dogs in the park, take care of the birds
We love the animals. You'll enjoy our house in San Francisco's Inner Sunset, just a few blocks south of Golden Gate Park and one block from the N Judah Muni train.
All of our animals are rescues. The birds aren't entirely tame, so someone with a gentle touch is required. We prefer sitters who have experience with birds. Barkley is a 15 pound Silky Terrier, like a large Yorkie. He has the name for a reason. Tootsie is a 30 pound Dachshund-Terrier mutt, built like a tank. She loves to hunt. The birds are all small. Turpie is a ten inch tall green cheek conure. She talks. Poor little Jambo is a very recent rescue and his former owner mutilated his feathers. We are looking forward to him molting and growing new flight feathers. Mister will step up onto a stick, but he's afraid of hands. Bananas is the tiniest and only has one leg, but despite that she will bully the cockatiels....
We have accounts at a 24/7 animal hospital and avian veterinary service, both nearby. + More info
Our Home & Location
2 miles to the beach, 3 blocks to Golden Gate Park, in range of all that San Francisco has to offer. There's a patio in the backyard. It can be pretty foggy in this part of San Francisco in the summer. The birds are in a sunroom in the back of the house, just off the bedroom. We have one bedroom with a king size bed. There is a comfortable queen size sofa bed in the living room. Another bedroom is configured as a sitting and dressing room.
Responsibilities & Pets
Play with dogs and take them on long walks several times a day. They can also play in our patio backyard. Feed them in the morning and night. Tootsie gets 3 half-cup scoops of dry dog food a day (2 morning 1 night). Barkley gets 2 half-cup scoops a day (1 morning 1 night). They both get 2 glucosamine biscuits at night. You can feed them some treats and a little bit of canned food. Barkley needs to eat in a different room than Tootsie or she will steal his food. The dogs will enjoy sleeping in the bed with you, but they are fine in the crate if you prefer that. *****
The bird cages need to be uncovered every morning and covered every night. The birds need 12 hours of sleep covered up. They need fresh seed and fresh water twice a day. It's especially important to change their water immediately if you see any bird poop in it. Don't let Bananas the little yellow parakeet fly free in the same room with the cockatiels as she bullies them. Be careful with Jambo the cockatiel as he's an awkward flyer. Turpie the conure in particular likes to see people, so you can put her in the large flight cage and roll it around the house. *****...
Don't take even a single chance on letting the birds out of the house! Never open the exterior doors in the bird room. Always close both bedroom doors before opening the bird cages and anytime the birds are out of their cages. Never let the dogs be in the same room with the birds. They can and will attack them. We will provide detailed written bird safety information. Please follow it. *****
The fish is easy, just feed him and he will be fine. *****
We need a sitter who is going to engage with our pets throughout the day. If you regularly need to be out of the house for 10+ hours at a time and think it's ok to leave the dogs crated all day, you're probably not the right person for our sit. We want you to enjoy your trip to San Francisco and all the wonderful things in the city, but that has to happen in the context of taking care of six animals. + More info
