Relax in a spacious Silicon Valley garden oasis with a mellow dog, near hiking, restaurants, shopping
We are a family with two boys ages 11 and 14, and a dog. My husband works in network security. I make educational science YouTube videos now, I used to run a retail store online, and before that I was a UX Designer.
We love to travel, but with two small children it was not often very much fun in the past. Our boys are old enough now that it's actually enjoyable, and we'd like to do it more often! Leaving a house with a pet in your 40s is not as easy as it used to be just closing the door on an apartment in your 20s though! That's where you come in....
Our dog Chrissy is really mellow and low-maintenance overall. There's just one strict rule: she requires medication to be given at 8:30am and 8:30pm sharp, every day. She has a seizure disorder and the timing of her medication is important. Apart from the dog's medication schedule, it's pretty low key here. We might have packages and mail to bring in, and a there are a few indoor plants to be watered if we're gone for more than one week. + More info
Our Home & Location
We're lucky enough to live in a diverse neighborhood with restaurants, hiking, shopping, mountains, and fairly decent cultural activities. We have Fremont Older Open Space just ten minutes away. and endless other hiking and cycling opportunities close by. Santa Cruz beach is 30 minutes away. Downtown San Jose, Campbell, Los Gatos and Saratoga are all close. The house has at least four grocery stores within five minutes drive: Nob Hill, Sprouts, Lucky, and Trader Joe's. All kinds of restaurants are within walking distance, including Forthright Oyster Bar, Capers, Starbucks, Mimi's, Panda Express,Noah's Bagels, Pokebar, The Melt, Red Robin, Buffalo Wild Wings, Veggie Grill, the Blue Door, Chipotle, etc. There is a Target and CVS right nearby.
Our house has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, 2 living rooms with dining areas, a lovely backyard with hot tub, fountain, lots of relaxing nooks, and a botanical garden of native California plants. The front porch is a lovely place to sit in the evening, to watch the sun set through the bamboo. If you fancy a swing, we have a swingset! It's a good core workout. :-) We also have a hummingbird garden in the front yard, it's full of hummingbirds all day long for most of the year....
We have two living rooms in the house, one is set up with a PS4 and Xbox and is mostly for video gaming. The other has Apple TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other services, mostly set up to watch movies and TV. Both are comfortable for hanging out! If you want to avoid screens, we have an eclectic library with lots of interesting and varied books to peruse.
The master bedroom has a king-sized Sleep Number mattress, so however you like your bed, you can set it to be harder, softer, etc. The bedroom is quiet and uncluttered and has a bathroom attached with a large tiled shower. There are two other bedrooms , another small bathroom, and my small pass-through office.
I am an avid cook, so the kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, equipment, spices, etc. Feel free to cook and use whatever you find.
In most situations we would be leaving one car at home, a Prius, and that could be available for your use if you need it. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
We have one dog, Chrissy. She is a super sweet, quirky, mellow dog. She is originally from Taiwan, and was rescued there as a puppy. An old lady found her abandoned as a puppy with her brother and sister. She is a very quiet girl who won't bother you for much of anything. She is sometimes more like a cat than she is a dog. She also has really long legs. Basically she looks like a deer crossed with a fox. We joke that she's a supermodel. She's slim and beautiful and is on drugs! LOL. Yes, that is true. She has a seizure disorder and is on a very strict medication schedule. She takes it in peanut butter and she is really good about it, but yes, you *have* to be here to give her meds at 8:30am and 8:30pm, without exception. If that's a problem, or if you have trouble keeping track of time, this is not the job for you. Likewise, if the idea of a possible seizure happening on your watch totally freaks you out, think twice about sitting for us. But if you give Chrissy her meds right on time, she generally only has one seizure every six weeks or so. Basically you just keep her safe while it lasts (about a minute), put something soft under her head, and then clean up afterwards. You can be gone anytime between 8:30am and 8:30pm, but the deal with this job is that at those times, you have to be here to give medication. Everything else is easy. Keep her food bowl full, keep her water bowl clean and filled. She will want to sleep on the bed with you, so you should be okay with that. She sleeps on top of the covers, and might try to lay on your legs. She also has a bed in my office, so she usually sleeps on that during the day. You can take her for a walk, or not. She has a built-in dog door to the backyard, so you don't even have to take her out, she does it herself. The meds are the key thing, and making sure she has food and water.
