Dog Sitter Needed in Beautiful Home Near Beach in Santa Cruz County
Greetings! My husband Ray and I are retired and live in beautiful La Selva Beach, California with our 5-year old Bichon Frise dog named Oscar. We have two sons in their 20s who live and work in the Bay Area. Ray and I like to travel and often need someone to care for Oscar while we're gone. We have used a housesitter/dog sitter twice, and prefer that instead of boarding Oscar so he can stay home (and we can have someone staying in our house). We have a beautiful home and we are set up for guests with all of the amenities. I used to be a science teacher and graphic designer, and Ray worked for the State of California in education policy finance. We both enjoy music, cooking, time with family, travel and exploring the Monterey Bay area.
Our Home & Location
We have a beautiful home uphill from a lovely beach that is many miles long. We have a key for you to private beach access at La Selva Beach, 1 mile down the hill from our house. We will let you use our free pass to all of the California state parks and state beaches, including Manresa State Beach at the bottom of the hill, in La Selva Beach. Our house has a gourmet kitchen with 5-burner Wolf gas range, granite counters, and stainless steel appliances. Upstairs on the main level, along with the kitchen, we have a dining room, living room and family room as well as the guest bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The guest bedroom that you would be staying in is large, with a vaulted ceiling with skylights, recessed lighting, 32" HDTV with full Xfinity cable channel selection (On Demand, HBO, Showtime and Netflix). There is a desk, chair and closet in the room and very fast wi-fi. There is a separate closet with newer washer and dryer in the guest suite. A sliding glass door leads to a small deck overlooking lovely trees and foliage (no houses), so the room has a beautiful view.
We have beach chairs, beach towels and beach umbrellas for your use (Oscar likes to go to the beach)....
We are on 1/3 acre with a professional gardener, pine and oak trees and many birds. Our street is a dead end so there is very little traffic and it is very quiet. We have four decks including the upstairs deck with barbecue, table, chairs and an umbrella.
Inside (upstairs) there are vaulted open beam ceilings, stained glass windows, and a 5-sided turret with many windows that goes up very high. We have a fireplace for chilly days and evenings. There is a new HVAC system with a high-efficiency furnace and central air conditioning in case it gets warm outside.
La Selva Beach is a quaint enclave about 3-4 miles south of Aptos and 7 miles south of Capitola-By-The-Sea. We are about 13 miles south of the city of Santa Cruz and 35 minutes north of Monterey. Carmel is just south of Monterey, then about 20 miles farther south along spectacular coastline is Big Sur. San Francisco is a 1.5 hour drive north. There are a wealth of activities here -- whale watching, kayaking, mountain bike riding, surf lessons, walking on the beach, restaurants, hiking, and a lively music scene. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is an amusement park on the beach that has garnered an award for best seaside amusement park in the world. One can get a beautiful view from the Santa Cruz Wharf and walk from there along the oceanside walking path on West Cliff Drive. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Oscar needs feeding twice a day. We prepare his food, mixing roasted chicken with Happy Dog Food. Happy Dog Food will need to be cooked every few days (it's rice and dehydrated vegetables). You just simmer it in boiling water for 45 minutes. One batch lasts several days.
Oscar needs a walk once a day. This can be in the neighborhood, or at Manresa Beach at the bottom of the hill, La Selva Beach, or if you want to take him in the car somewhere in the county....
He will need to be brushed once a day and have the sleep removed from his eyes.
Oscar has a dog door for use during the day, out to our fenced yard. Once it gets dark, you'll need to put the cover on the dog door so he can't go outside at night, and close the baby gate at the top of the deck stairs so he can't access the lower yard. After it's closed you'll need to take him outside to relieve himself if he whines to go outside (usually once in the evening).
Oscar sleeps on our bed and not in a crate, and we have steps up to the bed. So, he would like to sleep with you on the bed. Thanks for considering staying at our place with Oscar!
