Mountain Retreat with stunning views of the Sangre De Cristo's
Gordon and Angela's home, Reeves Ridge Ranch sits atop a ridge within Primero Ranch, just north of Segundo in southern Colorado. The house has 360 degree views over the valleys below and the mountains beyond. To the west are the Sangre De Cristo mountains, running north to south, these peaks, including Culebra, which at 14,053ft is the last 14er of the Rockies as they gradually descend south into New Mexico. To the east is Fisher's Peak, a flat top mountain looming over the Las Animas County seat of Trinidad. Our home is "off the grid" which means we create all of our electrical needs from solar panels, (with a propane generator for emergency power backup). Primero Ranch is a private, gated, residential community with over 40 miles of private roads. Ideally, whoever chooses to share our home with Trinny, will love peace and quiet, and probably, walking-hiking, cross country skiing when the snow is on the ground and getting away from it all. We have ATV/Quad bikes for use if you want to explore a little and a couple of older mountain bikes (no suspension). The accommodation consists of a fully self contained, open plan, one bedroom (king size bed, 40 inch TV), large apartment with vaulted aspen wood ceilings, including full kitchen and shower. The main house is a one bedroom (king size bed, 70 inch TV) home including, full kitchen, living room (50 inch TV), shower and extensive decks with spectacular views. Adjoining the house is a pool room with Endless Pool swimming pool, (check to make sure its open for winter months) with large dining and seating area with 70 inch TV) and again spectacular views of the mountains and sunsets you would not believe. TV service is by Dish Network Satellite including premium channels such as HBO etc. plus a few boxed DVD sets, (Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Foyle's War (a compelling WWII British detective series) Rome, Downton Abbey and a few racing DVDs, Le Mans, Grand Prix and Bullitt and Senna).
Trinny, our 6 year old Golden Retriever, is a Gem. Mild mannered, loving and possibly the prettiest dog on the planet!! She's in excellent health, although prefers not to walk too far on the road, she prefers going off the path but is not particularly energetic, preferring to take life at a leisurely pace. She does not sleep on beds or get on the furniture although she may try to push the envelope and test her relationship with you and try to sit with you on a sun lounger....
The house has a large walled garden with irrigation system in the summer with a large variety of flowering plants and wildflowers. Of course in the winter the garden is not in bloom but provides a calm sheltered sun trap for coffee or tea in the morning.
We have many photos if you're interested in seeing more of our little slice of Paradise. + More info
Our Home & Location
Reeves Ridge Ranch sits at 7400ft above sea level, so enough to make you breathe heavier during exercise than you would in London, L.A. or Sydney. We produce our own electricity by solar panels which is then inverted to 110v domestic electricity. Propane is stored in a 1000 gallon tank on site. The propane is used for heating, hot water for showers and cooking. We practice water saving which means turn off the shower head after wetting and then turn back on for rinsing.
This is Rural America and our nearest neighbor is 1/2 a mile away, Ringo's, the local grocery store, is a 10 minute drive down the hill into Segundo and has most things you'd need and an excellent deli counter with cut meats and many prepared foods if you're in a rush that evening. They also have a liquor store inside. A Petrol/Gas Station that's open all hours with credit card pumps. Trinidad is just a quick 20 minutes away and has more variety such as Safeway and a Super Walmart selling anything and most everything you could want for. The Buildings in Trinidad are beautiful old brick and stone structures, most built by Italian masons back in the early 1900's....
Our place is a fabulous retreat that will suit many ideals, Runners/Sportsmen and women, wanting to get some altitude training. Great if you're an athlete training for an event as you can train your body to assimilate oxygen at a more efficient rate. That only lasts about a month, so you might haver to return!! Writers wanting to start that new chapter or proof read their latest novel or poems. Musicians wanting to work on their new songs, Artists and photographers looking to interpret the fabulous scenery and wildlife, in fact anyone looking for inspiration or just seeking that peace and quiet that brings new release and contentment you could bottle.
We're not too far from Santa Fe in New Mexico (just 3 hours down the Interstate I25) where Latin America meets New York with art galleries, restaurants, (Raaga is one of the best Indian Cuisine Restaurants in the western hemisphere, David, the owner, was one of the chefs responsible for opening Chutney Mary's in London). If you're there at the right time take in the Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet or Flamenco performances. Besides the culture there's excellent hiking just out of town and skiing on an exciting but uncrowded mountain with a top lift that summits at over 12,000ft.
Full Disclosure dictates that I broach this subject below:
Colorado is now a Cannabis Legal State and weed and edibles can be bought from several dedicated stores on Commercial and main Street in Trinidad. Although it's legal to smoke in private places our place is not one of them. No problem if you want to light up on the deck but not inside please and no edibles as Trinny is highly allergic to cannabis/weed as we found out after some kind "ne'er do well" fed her an infused gummy bear and she nearly didn't make it!!! If you do care to smoke on the deck DO NOT throw the butt over the railing, forest fires in Colorado devastate thousands of acres every year and destroy properties and lives. It takes over 60 years for a forest to begin to recover from fire. Wet the butt and put it in the trash/rubbish bin.
Sorry about that but needed to be said!
All that aside you will love your stay here and Trinny will not be forgotten for many a moon. We welcome you to ask us more questions, request more photos and more info, thank you for looking. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
We'd like you to care for Trinny and walk her a couple of times a day, 2 meals a day and a lunch time snack. She drinks a lot of water and consequently needs to pee 3 or 4 times. She will let you know when she's hungry and thirsty. She's needy and wants tickles constantly while you watch TV. She never needs scolding as she's never in trouble. The house needs general housekeeping, the pool (if operating) needs very little attention as the filtration system does not rely on chlorine. We have a separate petrol/gasoline generator to power the Endlesspool flow generator and that just requires starting with a hand pull when you wish to swim. We have quite a few houseplants that need watering every 2 weeks, all outside plants are taken care of with the irrigation system.
Occasionally in the winter if its cloudy for a few days and the solar panels are not charging the system, the backup generator will kick in to provide electricity....
If it does snow we have snow shovels that you are welcome to use, just be careful as it's strenuous and if you're not used to altitude take it VERY easy, especially if you're over 50. The roads are plowed (ploughed if your English) by the owners association but it takes a day to plow 40 miles with a plow on the front of a pickup truck. We have a Caterpillar 247B tracked Skidsteer and if you know how to use it you're welcome to clear the driveway but leave some gravel on the surface!! If the forecast is for heavy snow (doesn't happen often) make sure you have plenty of provisions and wine/beer whatever to keep you comfy for a day or two. + More info
