Beautiful off-grid homestead on Big Island, HI needs caretakers
Aloha, we are Jeff and Melissa! We have 3.5 acres of land on the Big Island of HI. My partner and I have many gardens and a new orchard as well as two very sweet dogs. I have a thriving massage business in Hilo and my partner is a wildland firefighter in the summer. He also manages an Airbnb in Volcano during his off months. We both travel from time to time and often find ourselves needing caretakers to look after our beloved off-grid home and pooches. I have had many caretakers over the years and was turned on to this website last year and it's a great resource! Please note, if you cannot caretake during the dates currently listed, please do not apply. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you. Aloha :-)
Our Home & Location
My house and land are situated in a rural area. It is about 9 miles from the closest town, however, we have a general store right around the corner as well as a farmer's market that happens every Saturday morning and Wednesday night. On Wednesday nights, there is live music and dancing as well as tons of food vendors and local arts and crafts. It's a very lively scene! My place is also very close to the coast so we often hear the ocean at night. Nearby are two beautiful black sand beaches, wonderful areas to hike along the coast, and a lovely, scenic road to ride bikes. Kalani Honua, which hosts a wide variety of workshops is about 4 miles away. We are also fairly close to the lava viewing area (about 8 miles away) where one can see the newest earth on the planet. It is a really special area full of colorful people and somewhat of an alternative lifestyle. (Note: as of April 15th, we have been working on completing a bathhouse that will have two flushing toilets, a laundry area, a bath tub area and another shower. We hope to have this project complete by the time we leave, May 31st.)
Responsibilities & Pets
My homestead is off-grid. This means we have a solar system where we derive energy and a catchment water system where we collect rainwater. We also have an outdoor composting toilet (lua.) One job responsibility is to keep an eye on the solar system (i.e. making sure batteries are not being drained and maintaining water level in batteries.) My preference is to have people who are familiar with off-grid living and/or extremely conscious of water and energy usage. Also, keep in mind this is the tropics and so, as neat and clean as we are, we do have things like geckos and an occasional roach, rat or mouse. (Note: This care taking position would not be suitable for someone who is not okay living with the elements and with nature.) We have 3.5 acres of land where we have newly planted citrus and various fruit trees which may need watering. We also have vegetable gardens which would also need watering. Some land maintenance may be required such as weedwhacking and mowing the lawn as well as hand weeding. I have two dogs that need to be fed and cared for. This would include feeding them twice/day and taking them for an occasional walk. They have the run of 3.5 acres but they definitely enjoy walks and runs. My preference is to have a couple and also people who are handy.
