Spend the winter near beautiful Acadia National Park in Maine
I recently retired from a career in education and will be spending my summers in Maine and my winters in Costa Rica. I love to hike, kayak, garden and write. I am bilingual in Spanish and English.
Our Home & Location
My Maine home is a log cabin located near the beautiful Jordan River (which is not a river at all - it's actually part of the ocean). We are 2 1/2 miles from the Bar Harbor Airport just before the bridge onto Mount Desert Island where Acadia National Park is located. The area abounds with fun things to do in winter, including hiking, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing. College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor and the University of Maine at Orono also host many interesting activities.
The property has been in my family for two generations. My parents lived in the house across the driveway for 23 years, and built the log cabin as a rental. It has two spacious apartments. You would stay in the one upstairs with the cats, and there is another tenant living downstairs. The upstairs unit has two bedrooms, a large loft, modern kitchen, and a deck running along the entire side of the house. Great location for someone who enjoys peace and quiet, winter activities, and/or being in the outdoors....
Ellsworth is just 15 minutes away by car, with plentiful grocery stores, a Walmart, Home Depot, and Marden's where you can get great bargains on household goods. My car will be stored in the garage so let me know if you need one and it can be rented for a very reasonable amount.
NOTE: I just acquired the property so ignore the unfurnished pictures. It will have furniture by the time you get here! + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
The kitties are pretty low maintenance and require simply food, water and litter box maintenance. They will be adjusting to their new home, having recently traveled from Maryland. Luke, the siamese, is a real sweetie. He will spend the entire day outside when possible so be sure to keep him in before dark so he doesn't spend the night out there. Once he warms up to you he likes to nuzzle and will butt his head into your chin to show affection. Xochitl (Sochi for short) is a tuxedo cat. She loves people, and when she figures out someone will feed her and give her attention, she'll follow you around the house like a dog! She does tend to be on the anxious side, and has been known to pee on the floor sometimes (but only on smooth surfaces for some reason). Keeping rugs down in the bathroom seems to help. Luke and Xochitl will be happy to curl up on your lap while you are watching tv or reading.
I haven't had a chance to plant much in the garden yet, and someone comes to mow the lawn and plow the snow....
Rent is free in exchange for pet sitting. House sitter is responsible for utilities. Car available for low monthly rent as needed. If you don't use it, it would need to be started up occasionally to keep the battery in good shape. + More info
