Greetings! My husband and I are both semi-retired (we have our own businesses). We love our home, pets, and garden, but we also like to travel, so it's important that we have trustworthy people to look out for them. We have used a local family for years to come in and feed the animals, but for longer trips, we like to have someone stay in our home.
Our Home & Location
We live in a Deck House, which is a post-and-beam kit house that was very fashionable in the 70s. It's a split-level. The upstairs has an open plan living/dining/kitchen area, and the master bedroom, full bath, and Chris' office. Downstairs includes Chris' mancave with the big TV, guest room, my home office, exercise room, full bath, and utility room. There is a deck facing the back yard. There is a screened-in porch, but we use that mostly for storage.
We live on 6 acres of mostly wooded land. The backyard has a fire pit and garden. The house is set back quite a ways from the street, so it's very private....
Circuit breakers are in the utility room (contains furnace and& washer/dryer).
Furnace cutoff switch is in front of utility room, just below ceiling on right side.
Main Water shutoff is under the stair all the way back on the left. Flashlight is just inside the back sliding door on windowsill.
Downstairs and screen porch sliding doors can't be locked. Please use the specifically-designed boards to prevent these doors from being opened from the outside. Don't worry about locking up the house when you go out. In over 20 years, we have never had a problem. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
PRIMARY. Bring in mail. Delivered once a day around 4P to ugly yellow mailbox at foot of driveway. Jeff the mailman will leave larger packages at backdoor.
PRIMARY. Care for Cats .
Cat Feeding. Gemma (fat calico). Morning feed is 1/2 cup dry food in paw print bowl by porch sliding glass door.. Her dry food & measuring cup are in green topped plastic tub on porch. Ozzie (big black) & Tiggy (small, skittish tortoise-shell) get one can of wet divided into cat dishes with served on plastic tray on coffee table along with bowl of dry food. Cats’ weekly supply of wet & dry food is on kitchen counter and organized by cat....
GEMMA needs PILLING twice a week. She gets 1/2 pill in the evening. She is fairly easy to pill. Pick her up by putting your left under her towards the breast bone, place her on upstairs bathroom vanity, squeeze out a quarter inch of hairball remedy from the tube and let lick it up, open her mouth from the side, quickly shove the 1/2 pill her throat, and repeat the hair ball treat. Gemma does not bite or scratch even though she doesn't like it.
PLEASE DON'T LET CATS GO OUTSIDE. OZZIE AND GEMMA WILL HOVER AROUND BACK DOOR & SNEAK OUT VERY QUICKLY. Ozzie lurks invisibly next to back door so bang lightly on door and yell NO before entering. If GEMMA escapes, follow her around by walking next to her and picking her up. As for OZZIE, don’t chase or pick up. Open outside porch door to deck. Wait inside dining room, back & front doors, open door when you see him lurking outside, crinkle stick" treats wrapper (stored in Ozzie/Tiggy dry food container on kitchen counter) and throw stick pieces on floor inside of the door. Be patient. It might help to sit on floor inside door.
NOTES: Ozzie and Tiggy are less timid and more approachable if you sit on the floor or steps and play with them. TIGGY HIDES under comforters, blankets or sheets so please look for any bumps and lumps before laying down on beds, Because Tiggy hides in so many places, please crack doors for bedrooms, upstairs office, bathrooms, and downstairs rooms. Surprisingly, Tiggy will sit on your lap if you put your put feet up in the living room recliners, have blanket on your lap, watch TV, and stay still & quiet. Tiggy and Ozzie don't like loud noises and grow fearful of you repeatedly call their names, let them come to you by sitting on furniture, stairs, or the floor. Flick their toys around around and throw the mice down the hallways.
Litter Boxes. Scoop all three litter boxes once a day. Locations are upstairs office on left side of desk and downstairs utility room (2). Upstairs get the heaviest usage. Bags, scoopers, extra litter, and cleaning supplies are located next to boxes. Tied off bags of waster can be thrown into large trash can outside back door.
PRIMARY. Care for fish. Feed pinch of dry flakes or 2 scoops (tiny red plastic scoop) of mini balls in morning and evening. Turn on lights in morning and out in evening. Call my brother Tom Christiansen if there are any problems (dead fish, leaks, pump problems, etc.). Watch out when feeding, fish may splash water on you.
OPTIONAL. Wild Birds & Turkeys. Feeding the wild birds is optional. There are eight bird feeders (1 suet ball cage off deck, 2 nyger/finch off deck, 5 white saffron seed feeders). Saffron feeders are located: off deck, beyond end of driveway (don’t bother with this one), right side of wooden boxes outside dining room deck, & front of house near bird bath. All bird foods are in a small metal trash to the left of house trashcan outside back door. If bird bath water gets low, use plastic jug (on screened porch near shoes) filled with cold water to refill. NOTES: If there is snow and ice, please feel free to skip the the birds. Occasionally, bird feeders attract large wild turkeys. They may seem tame, but please don’t get any closer than 20 feet.
UNNECESSARY. No care needed for plants. + More info
