East Tennessee counrty farmhouse, yet not far from civilization
We are a couple who travel extensively, both in the USA and international. We have a part-time residence in Bangalore, India and spend between 9 and 12 weeks at a time there several times a year. This is in relation to my husband’s (Van) job. He is a self-employed expert and consultant to the rubber industry. In addition to our travels to India, we are often in other parts of our country and the world, either for the purpose of work, missions, or personal choice. Until recently, we either had adult children living with us, or nearby, who could care for our home and animals. But that circumstance has changed and we find ourselves searching for options that will benefit us, our pets, and whomever can assist us.
I am a homemaker who has spent most of my married life caring for our home and children while Van traveled for business. We always told ourselves if he was still traveling when the children had grown, I would join him. So, now my “occupation” is traveling with my husband. A tough job, I know, but I make the sacrifice. ;)
Our Home & Location
We consider our home to be farmhouse in style and setting. We are located at the end of a dead end road/drive. We have 2 near neighbors. One owns 2 horses and the other is a horse farm with a good number of horses. Although very rural in feeling and appearance, we are less than 5 minutes from access to the Interstate.
We moved here less than 2 years ago. Since moving, we have been traveling as much as we have been home. Therefore, the house is not as organized as I would like. But it gets closer each week. It's not fancy, but it's home and has a comfortable, lived in feeling....
We are both non-smokers and request that anyone considering sitting for us also be non-smokers.
We are located near Knoxville, in East Tennessee. Downtown Knoxville is only about a 45 minute drive. Nashville is only about 2 hours away. Both cities have much to offer in entertainment, restaurants, and cultural activities. Although Rockwood is in Roane county, we are not in the city limits, and in fact are located in Cumberland County. This is an issue only in that we are just 2 miles from the time zone line where it changes from Central to Eastern time zone. Even though we are technically in Central Time Zone, because almost everyone around us either works or goes to school over in Roane County, to people in our area run on Eastern Time...Even the churches. Something to keep in mind is one is heading east or west. We keep our phones locked onto Eastern Time Zone (New York), rather than Central (Chicago). As are all the clocks in the house also set to Eastern. Just something to keep in mind. Also, because we are not within the city limits of Rockwood, but in fact in a different county, our emergency services come out of Crossville, not Rockwood.
There are lots of state parks for hiking, boating, and other outdoor activities surrounding us. Gatlinburg and the Smokey Mountain National Park is less than 2 hours away.
In addition, there are many small towns surrounding us with small town charm and amenities.
Our home is heated and cooled with a geothermal unit, as well as individual zone units in each room. We also use a wood stove for heat.
There is no trash pickup at our location. However, there is an easy drop-off station just a few minutes drive away. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
We have one dog (Xena). She is a small (4 1/2 pound) Yorkie. She is very quiet and very much a people/lap dog. She turned 11 years old Feb.s 2018. She will potty outside when taken, but mostly uses an inside pee-pee pad. On occasion, especially if she is stressed (or miffed at us), she will use the bathroom on the floor. But that is not often, and as it is a wood floor, it is easy to clean up. She gets fed once a day, in the morning. She can be left alone in the house all day (she does not kennel), but not alone overnight. We prefer that she not be left alone all day too often or several days consecutively. She is groomed every 8 weeks. If she has a grooming appointment while we are traveling, we would want the sitter to take her. All info and directions would be provided, and payment either made ahead of time, or left with sitter. She takes a heart worm medication once a month and a flea and tick medication once every 3 months.
We have 3 cats, Sparrow (15 years old), Goldilocks (Goldie), and Shrek (both 1 year old). The cats are all outside cats and require little to no attention other than feeding. There is an automatic feeder available for trips longer than a couple of days. It will feed for up to a week. Although they are outside cats, they not wild and are actually very friendly. We do try to put a liquid, between the shoulder blades, type of flea and tick treatment on them once a month at least during the summer months....
Xena and the cats get along very well and like to play with each other whenever Xena is outside. Its possible Xena thinks she is a cat. LOL + More info
