peaceful log cabin in the woods of beautiful Vermont overlooking a waterfall (yet close to Burlington!)
We are two professionals (physician and a writer) with two young boys. I work at the University of Vermont I often travel to present my research at conferences, and for this trip in June we are all going along. We frequently enjoy sharing our special house with friends, (and friends of friends) when we are away. We usually have no difficulty finding someone to stay to keep our 7 year old friendly labradoodle company, play in the waterfall, explore the many acres of trails(house is on 25 acres, surrounded by 2000 acres of conserved land), and just hang out on the porch... but for this trip we need help. Our neighbors have had great experiences using this web site so we thought we'd give it a try last year and had a great sitter.
Our Home & Location
The house is situated on 25 acres (~10 hectare) of mostly woods. The house overlooks a field, and large waterfall that is on conserved land and has a pool at the bottom that is nice to play and cool off in. The woods behind us are hilly, we have a number of trails, and have a few spots (including a camping platform) high up above for a lookout over the mountains (about 30min walk round trip if you are fit and ok with hills). Adjacent to the property is approximately 2000 acres (809 hectares) of conserved land, open to the public for hiking with some nice trails and logging roads to explore (unmarked). The road our house is on is quiet , scenic, and peaceful to walk on.
However, we have many friendly neighbors on the road. Although you cannot see anyone from the house, it does not feel isolated. In addition to the small town of Richmond Vermont (which has a nice cafe, several great locally owned restaurants and pubs, and a large grocery store), we are 15min from I89, which means a quick drive to Burlington (approx 25min) and Lake Champlain all it has to offer (google!). We are about 35min from Montpelier, and a similar distance to Stowe and about 15 minutes from Waterbury....
There are endless local outdoor attractions nearby in the mountains and on Lake Champlain (we can give you many tips depending on hour activity of choice), and many cultural activities in Burlington and Montpelier.
We are about 2hrs drive from Montreal and 3hrs from Boston, and 5hrs from New York City if you'd like to combine with other trips. A few hours from the Adirondacks across Lake Champlain (depending on destination). Burlington airport is an easy 20min drive and has multiple direct flights a day to New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington DC among other hubs. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
Joey our dog would love a nice walk (or jog/run) at least twice a day, and just your company otherwise. There are many trails he could show you (we adopted him, he knows the area well as actually came with the house when we bought it!) and the dead-end dirt road is also nice for a stroll as it goes another mile or so up from our house. He is exceptionally well trained (ie, will not eat until you say "ok"), and enjoys to catch balls and sticks, and of course belly rubs.
He can go about a 6hr stretch alone, if you wanted to venture off to Burlington or explore any of the surrounding area. But Joey also loves the car and is easy to hang out with on a leash....
Our son also has 2 gerbils (Izzy and Sophie) who just need water and food checked on once a day. We have a fish that need to be fed once a day.
We may ask you to check on and eat from the garden too, and perhaps turn on a water hose attached to a sprinkler down there if its dry for a few days in a row. + More info
