Cozy Home and Cuddly Pets in a Vibrant Neighborhood
Hello! We are Emily, Hubert, and Natalia. We live in an old home in the vibrant and walkable neighborhood of South Perry in Spokane, WA. Our home is a 1902, which we lovingly call our tiny farmhouse in the city. In the summer, we have a (sometimes) successful backyard garden. Our four legged family members - Shadow the dog, and Lola the cat - don't always get to join us on adventures, but they would love to have you come stay with them. They are both extreme cuddle bugs who will snuggle you 24/7 if you let them. Lola loves nothing more than to sleep the day away in a sunny spot - a bonus if that spot is in your lap. Shadow will take you for walks around the neighborhood and beg you to take him to the nearby dog park or for hikes. Our goal is for our home to feel like your home for a few days, weeks, or a month while you stay here.
Our Home & Location
Our home is located just blocks from the busy neighborhood center of the Perry District. You'll be within walking distance of a handful of restaurants (we love The Lantern and South Perry Pizza), as well as a coffee shop, a summer farmer's market, a yoga studio, and many other small shops. There are a few grocery stores nearby, although none within walking distance, including Fred Meyer, Safeway, Super 1, and Trader Joe's. Spokane is a great small town city where you can explore the outdoors. With wonderful places to ski, snowboard, or snowshoe in the winter, and hike in the summer, you'll have a blast exploring with our pup!
Our home is not large, and as such, you'll have access to most all of it. The garage is detached, and you should not need in there. We have a queen sized guest bed on the floor in the guest room/office. Our house sitter is welcome to stay in our room (queen sized bed) as well. Shadow is allowed to snuggle our guests if they choose, but he is not allowed in our bed. If you'd like 60lbs of snuggle buddy, we recommend the guest bed. If you're traveling with a young child, we can also keep our daughter's room with a crib available for your use. Otherwise, we will most likely close that door. It's a favorite sunning spot of our cat, however, and I would imagine they'd beg you to open it up....
We have high speed internet (although, not fiber) and I have a small home office set up in the guest room. You're welcome to use my desk to work from, as well as the dining room table, as I often do. We encourage you to take advantage of our kitchen and cook a few meals. We have one bathroom with a full sized bathtub. Our home is right on the park, with great access to the Ben Burr trail as well, should you want to take a longer stroll. Shadow would be happy to join you!
As a caveat: we are - slowly - renovating our home and there are a few unfinished projects around. There is nothing that is unsafe for a small child, but please be aware that there are things such as unfinished drywall in our home. + More info
Responsibilities & Pets
We sometimes travel with our dog, but for the most part, assume that both pets will be your responsibility. Shadow is an active, 60lb goofball. He needs daily walks - two would be best, but one solid walk is good too - and he really could use someone who knows how to handle a headstrong dog. Shadow has a heart the size of Texas, but he is a rescue dog whose ears don't always seem to listen. He is (as far as we can tell) a German Shepherd/Husky/Lab mix. He's a total love, but very headstrong and smart. He will test your boundaries to see how "alpha" you are. Once he's figured out how things stand, he will be mellow as can be. Until he sees a dog with a ball in the park - then he wants to play! He's accustomed to going for walks with his harness, although you can use a quicklead as well. He gets fed twice a day, and while he can be left alone for 3-4 hours a time, he is spoiled because Emily works from home most days. We have just transitioned him out of his crate, and he does very well at home alone. He gets fed twice a day - in the morning around 6 and in the evening around 8 - although the times are flexible. Should you sleep in too long, he will wake you up and demand attention and a walk.
Lola is fairly low maintenance as long as you provide her with plenty of love and attention. She is fed daily and prefers to have her litter box cleaned every day or two. She will sleep with you at night and try to keep you from working should you have a laptop around. She is a very vocal and chatty cat at times, but mostly well behaved. She has a goal of destroying any and all house plants, which is why you'll find them tucked up in places that are hard for her to reach....
We have a handful of house plants that always need minor attention. Those details will be left in the house manual and discussed before each sit. In the summer, we request that our house sitter also tend to the garden, picking any ripe produce. We can make arrangements for a neighbor to take care of that, should our house sitter not want to consume all the tomatoes, cucumbers, and other goodies we grow. For the most part, our sprinklers and watering system is on a timer and will not need your attention. A longer-term housesit would require you to mow the law as well. In the winter, we will leave snow shovels and salt, so that you can keep our sidewalks clear. Details on trash, recycling, and yard waste will also be in the house manual. + More info
