Stunning Columbia Gorge Setting with One Elderly Feline Fella
We are both English teachers and love to travel, collect art, and eat good food. We also dearly love our old cat, so it's important to us to find someone who is entirely comfortable with cats and their care and will care for him tenderly and carefully, so that we may travel worry free. We are a bit anxious about leaving because he is frail, a bit shy, and requires a lot of love and nurturing. This is our primary concern. Our house-sitters this August were terrific and kept him happy and in good health, but did have to take him to the vet one time to receive fluids and medication.
Our Home & Location
This comfortable 1970s ranch-style home is perched on 30 acres high above the Columbia River Gorge, right in the middle of the famous Cape Horn Trail. One can literally step out the door and hike this scenic trail that others travel from all around the world to experience. Lots of birds and wildlife can be seen from the decks, and the nearby Steigerwald Wildlife Refuge provides superb bird-watching. Nonetheless, we are only 3 short miles by car from Hwy 14 and 15 minutes from Stevenson, WA driving east and Washougal and Camas, driving west, where there are restaurants, grocery stores, and even a wonderful cinema. PDX and Portland are easily accessible and about a 45 minute commute by car.
Winters here are exquisite when it snows, but can also present a challenge should there be a big storm. Visitors should be prepared to drive on snowy (sometimes icy) roads for brief periods should the weather turn, or be content to stay put for a day or two. Generally, however, the temperatures range in the 30s and 40s in December with rain as a frequent visitor. Even in rain, the views are gorgeous, and Mt. Hood and its two ski resorts are accessible as daytime destinations.
Responsibilities & Pets
Samedi (black and white longhair) is an old sweet guy who has recently been diagnosed with kidney disease. That means that he can be fussy about his food. The caregivers will need to administer medication ointment to his ear, make sure that he has access to clean fresh water in various locations, and will need to scoop the cat litter twice each day from his box. Although shy, he is very affectionate and enjoys and needs gentle petting and company. We also ask that you fill the birdfeeder with seeds daily.
