My experience
I now have several experiences as a professional housesitter. The first one involved looking after 7 rescue cats (one diabetic and needing daily injections) for 3 months in a rural farmhouse in France. Then another cat (indoors and…

Once Alison applied for my house/dog sit I arranged to have a meeting via Zoom so that we could get better acquainted and further discuss the requirements for my house/dog sit. Alison seemed to be a good fit for myself and also for my daughter, Christa. We continued to communicate over the coming months in prep for her stay at my home. As arranged, Alison arrived a couple of days before I was to leave for my trip. I picked her up at the airport in Vancouver and made sure I had some of her favourite foods in stock for her first couple of days in my home. Spending time together before I was to depart meant that I could extend the car insurance needed to permit her to drive my car, provide orientation to the neighbourhood – grocery store locations, gas stations and transit choices as well as going over instructions for Archer, my 8 yr old yellow lab, and my house requirements. The Welcome Guide was already prepared for her (which included emergency info, contact names of friends and family and phone numbers, general information about area as well as the house routines like garbage and recycling pick up etc.). My main concern was Archer my dog. He was on a regular regimen of medication as well as feeding and walking daily. He developed a skin infection/wound prior to my leaving so required to be taken to the Vets several times while I was away and this also required Alison to do wound care as directed by the Vet. My daughter, Christa, was available to support Alison in taking Archer to the Vet appointments. Alison managed very well with all of this as evidenced by how well cared for Archer was when I returned. Alison was invited to a number of social events happening both in the neighbourhood and surrounding area over her stay. I feel she was warmly welcomed by my neighbours, family, and friends. I kept in touch with Alison while in Australia. She sent me photos of Archer and kept me informed about his trips to see the Vet. When I returned home I noted that the house was clean, neat, and tidy. Archer was happy to see me. I felt he was well looked after. The day I returned Alison made me dinner and we watched a movie together giving us a chance to debrief about her stay. I was delighted to hear that Alison enjoyed exploring the Port Coquitlam area and its many trails and attractions and was also able to continue to meet up with friends she made on prior trips to the Vancouver area. Hopefully it was a nice experience for her and I would be happy to have her back another time.
